I really, really like Meir Yedid's sponge ball routine. He had it on the web years ago and was going to put it in his book. As fas as I know, that hasn't materialized as of yet.
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.

Jay Sankey has what I believe to be the best all around sponge ball DVD on the market, titled Earplugs. I do not actually use the set of "earplug" sponge balls that come with it, but he teaches all of the traditional moves as well as a few of his own in great detail. The routine that I use has parts of my own creation and parts of the common sponge ball routines.
My all time favorite presentation is Hank Moorehouse's "Comedy Sponge Balls," though the routine has almost no similarity to what is normally thought of as a sponge ball routine. It is mostly a comic routine based around a sponge ball, but it is highly entertaining and I do use it often in my show. The most thorough routine I've seen is Brian Geer's routine, yet it is also the most impractical. While he does just about everything imaginable with sponge balls in one routine including vanishes, appearances, duplications, color changes, surprises, growing, shrinking, and productions of other objects via the balls. Entertaining as it may be, it takes up nearly all the pocket space in your pants and jacket combined for a routine that is only about 3 minutes long. However, if you ever get a chance to see it when he lectures or on his DVD "Hard Hitters," it is certainly worth the watch. |

Earplugs is a really good routine, and it can be tailored to fit your own presentation. My routine is very simple. It takes about 2 minutes. The only thing that takes up much room is the big ball.

My retention vanish comes straight from Garcia's book. I'm not trying to brag but it's about as good as it gets. I will routinely place my hand a foot or two from my spectator's face and do the vanish in slow motion and watch them miss the vanish every time.
The book is really good. I got mine from abebooks.com |

Yup - Garcia's encyclopedia is the best resource there is. Not cheap though, unfortunately (who said that best things in life are free?)

One thing I now realize I need to do is get my hands on Frank Garcia's Encyclopedia...!

I spent some time at the home of a friend with an extensive magic library on Saturday. Everytime I am there I spend at least a little bit of time with the Garcia sponge ball book.
While the book is not readily (or at least for a reasonable price) available, I bought a pamphlet a couple of years ago on Frank Garcia's sponge balls produced by Gene Gordon. It includes Garcia's master vanish and his perfect vanish, 10 count and basic routine or two. Also check out the L&L World's Greatest Magic dvd on sponge balls. Garcia is on it teaching his master vanish and a couple of other things. I don't recall where I bought the pamphlet and couldn't find a resource quickly this morning, but check with some of the brick and mortar stores who are likely to have it. Best, Jon |

People will try and tell you that once you have made a ball vanish from your hand and appear in a spectators hand the trick is over! This is certainly a great effect for the lay audience.
However, I do a routine based on Eugene Burger's. When you get the spectator open their hand with heaps of sponge balls in it the reaction is probably the best you will get! Simon

Ahhh, let's not let our imaginations be limited by what's been done! I do a sort of Benson Bowl routine where the spectator just watches. Honestly can't remember where I got it but I'm sure that the Benson Bowl had something to do with it and I'm sure that the ending is my own. Here's a video of me performing it at a hotel.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EviX60GSkDA There are other things. I'm playing with Goshman's "Then there were four!" I'm trying to come up with a better handling of it. I like the trick, the patter is REALLY bad. Lots of things can be done with sponge balls, cups and balls routines, chop cup. Garcia's book is great but it's not all there is. |
