Hello,
I recently purchased a luminescent dancing cane. It is basically a cane made of lights that is hooked up to dance. I love the effect but would like to add some different features and additional light effects to it. Specifically I want more lights and I want to do a color change. I want to make this myself. I need a source for very thin low resistance wire, I tried Radio Shack but they don't have a wide enough selection. Also I need a very, very small timer/switch to switch from the red loop to the blue loop. HELP! Joe |

You should try a car audio or custom car shop.
Go to http://www.streetglow.com and they have all different types of this wire. Most custom car and audio stores carry these. These car shops also have custom timer switches. |

Try a TV repair shop. Inside Tv's are minature relays and you can get them with time lag. As to 'thin' low resistance wire, there is no such thing. The smaller the diameter of any conductor, the higher the resistance.

Think copper foil. Burgler alarm tape for windows. There used to be a two or three conductor tape intended to run speaker signals across the wall. It could be painted.
The LED flashlights that are widely available have pulse circuitry that vastly extends the life of the batteries and brightness of the lights. Hearing aid batteries are cheap, light, and easy to obtain. |

I wouldn't think that the wire would present much of a problem for the short length a cane would require. I guess it all depends on what you are planning to do with it, however.
Usually, the best place to find the largest assortment of wire and cable (as well as answers to your questions) is at an electronics supplier in a medium-to-large city. When I was growing up we were lucky enough to have a great electronics shop in my small hometown, but it couldn't keep up with the larger suppliers and had to close shop. Regardless of what I was trying to do, from science projects to model trains to magic, they were always interested in what I was working on, and very forthcoming with suggestions. Hearing aid batteries would probably work fine for electronics, but I don't think they would last long with lights, especially the number it sounds like you want to use. Keep us posted... I was thinking of stealing the electronics from the LED flashlight and driving it with the hearing aid cells.
Obviously, after thinking about it, the cane already has electronics and a power supply. Without knowing what else he wants to do it is difficult to know the best path. |
