My Macbook just fell about 3 feet onto tile floor, and a piece came out of the border of the screen, however everything else seems to be working just fine, which leads me to wonder why the piece was in there to start with, if the computer can function perfectly well without it.

To absorb force from a drop so that nothing delicate got hurt from the fall?

Not only your data but your entire system. Use an imaging program like Ghost and make an exacxt copy of your system that you can reinstall all at one instead of having to reload all of your programs one at a time.
