Just curious if there were any published authors here at the Café?
Specifically, authors of non-magic related material? I recently finished the rough draft for a 300-page novel and wanted to get some tips on the revision process. Best Derek Merdinyan |

Not a direct answer to your question, but some great places to search for your next step:
Download the 6 "Getting Past Being Joe Blow Neopro" podcasts/lectures at http://www.spokenalex.org/audiobooks/200......t_be.php Also: http://shouldwrite.blogspot.com/ http://hollylisle.libsyn.com/ http://www.stormwolf.com/thesecrets/podcasts/ And absolutely Garrison Keillor's"Writer's Almanac" http://writersalmanac.publicradio.org/ |

Congrats on writing the novel!
Check out the book Self Editing For Fiction Writers. It's helped me improve many a manuscript. |

Hi Derek. Read it a few times and when you can read it as someone else might you'll start to see it a bit differently and figure out where you are a bit 'windy'. What I do is take on the persona of another type of person as if it were they who was reading. Fear not Editing! Attack it!
Then and this is a stretch but kind of fun...I read it as a character in the book or story would read it AFTER it had been published. Note 'their' reactions and see if it will fly in the face of their criticism. This has allowed on a couple of occasions to see a passage in a different light and different perspective and make some changes. Don't know if anybody else does it that way...I never read a book about writing a book. (Never will either. ) Have fun! And know when to END it! The process I mean...there is a point where it will be as good as it's going to be... If you read my Scary Dark Rides (Free at http://SpookyBook.com ) you'll see I write the same way I speak and the darndest thing is I have to work at it! The meter and rhythm to get it to click like you are sitting and listening around the stove (spit...tink!) was important...but I hear that's the effect I got so it worked. Not fiction but I do that the same way. Doug

Thanks everybody! Will check out those links soon.
Finals get over this Wednesday and despite finalizing 11 different essays, I can't wait to get back to writing fiction! Derek Merdinyan |
