This weekend I gave a lecture at a Contact Juggling convention on how to add more magic to their performances. Productions, vanishes, use of zombie etc....were all covered.

Here is a little video diary.

I really think the two arts together are potent juju. Indeed I feel one should synergize as many arts as possible to create unique and fresh performances. The division between magic, dance, mime and jugglery is illusory in nature.

Nice stuff.
Have you any videos of the magic and contact juggling you mentioned?

These are just my old ideas. I have a whole truck load of new ideas I am refining for presentation.

Thanks it looks great. Contact juggling seems to be getting more and more popular and progressing really fast. I learnt the basics with one ball years ago, but never took it to the level you have.
I can't decide if the magic helps or detracts from the contact stuff. The contact stuff looks so magical already, maybe adding vanishes and productions cheapens it and makes it seem like just a trick. The audience may just be asking "how did he do that?" rather than appreciating the magical flow of the balls. Or maybe the effects make the juggling even more magical?

I try to be very careful as to not break the hypnotic flow. The productions and vanishes as seen in my Meditations video, are really my meditations on magic and ball work. The Death Magic video mirrors my performance closer with hypnotic performance with little spikes of surprise. In my experience audiences enjoy it very much.

Man your really good Ive juggled fire and other things for about 3 years now but just got into contact about a year and a half ago. The only way Ive incorperaed it into magic is by forcing a card and using it as a crystal ball to look in and discover there card. Its gotten good reactions though. Wheres this CJ camp at you speak of?

It was in a state park in Austin Texas. A company called Try Out Toys sponsored the event.

Personally I feel presenting jugglery as magic goes a long way in people seeing magic. In my street/festival set I introduce the spheres only after doing the rings, rope and card manipulation - so the audience is lulled into seeing magic. Then the hypnotic/illusory spheres are pure magic in the eyes of most audience members.

Hey clynim,

You're in Columbus? There are local juggling clubs there you should find. The Jest Jugglers (I group I co-founded back in the 80's) is still going strong and meet at the rec center in German Village on Thursdays, I believe. And OSU used to have a club of their own. Professional variety entertainer, Dave Kaplan, is a close friend of mine (a magical juggler) and lives there, too. http://www.davidkaplanshow.com

Hope this helps,
Cap'n Mike
