I'll most likely never go to a Kidabra, as my Augusts are always booked solid. So a convention, nearer to home and held in January, would be more appealing to me. Not that I'd go, it would just be more appealing.
There's more than enough interest in the magic community to support another convention geared to children's performers, and competition is always a good thing. The new conference will need to start off small and build its attendance over several years. I'd personally like to see a convention held more like a professional level conference with multiple tracts of programming, discussion panels instead of single point lectures, and add on workshops that feature several hours of focused instruction instead of the usual hour or so of time that is usually given to convention lectures. Having lecturers over from across the pond, too, would be a nice change of pace, as well as up and coming performers instead of the same old lecturers we see at all of the conventions. Panels on the theatrical side of performing, as well as scripting, movement, and voice would be interesting; though, of very little interest to your usual magic convention attendee. Some more like the Phoenix Gatherings that were held a few years ago. Perhaps, something more like Mystery School. A conference that was limited to 40 or 50 attendees, who got a lot of one on one time with the professionals, would be the way to go instead of trying for your usual run of the mill convention.

Ken Scott,
I have respect for you because I'm familiar with your reputation, and I know how successful you are as a professional performer. I can not speak for Danny, but in my opinion, Kidabra magicians pretty much all fit the same mold. I am a kids magician, and do not fit that mold. Kidabra doesn't interest me, because I do a different kind of show (my own thing). I am not as successful as you, but I must be true to myself. So, don't look for me in Pigeon Forge, TN this August. Like Payne mentioned earlier - Why all the summer conventions? ARGHhhhh!!!!
Some of us cross over. My other major venue is "Street & Busking", and I gotta make hay while the sun shines. In the dead of winter, whilst I am freezing my buttocks off, would be a lovely time for a conference. There is much to learn from others, and the ability to enhance my act is something I strive for, but the dollars and cents got to make sense. Taking a week off during prime-time is tough to justify to Momma. There are some performers here that I would love to have some time with (Al, Kimmo, Roger, Baba Gede Nibo, Jamie Grant, just to name a few). I think I could learn a ton, and if we all managed to stay out of jail for creating a public nuisance, it might be a bonus...

I think we have so far established that a warm place in January is the ideal time and location for the First Annual Ridiculous Magic and Circus Arts Convention (FARMCAC). Although some prefer the West Coast as the warm place, I think we can be assured of a warmer locale in Arizona in January, and furthermore, it has the advantage of not being a usual convention location. The Diamond Jam Balloon Twister's Convention is being held this January in Mesa, AZ, but as far as I know, no other magic convention gets hosted there. I would guess we won't be ready with our convention (notice the "our") until January of 2008.

I think, for this type of convention, one of the perfect people to lecture would be "Mr. Eccentrics" (Charlie Fry). Also, I believe this multi-discipline type of idea is what Motionfest is all about.

Ken,
Been there, done that. Helped put on the 2004 PCAM convention in Seattle. Besides, this is Jolly Rogers bailiwick, and I wouldn't want to step on his toes. You also really don't want to be in Seattle in January.

Well, I'm glad that's settled. While we're waiting to hear back from Roger, maybe we can all go out and recruit dealers who would be interested, as well as lecturers and performers for the gala shows. Don't just toss out names. Anyone can do that. Actually make contact with people you think would be interested in such an event, and post that you contacted the "XYZ Magic Company" and they expressed an interest, or that you contacted David Copperfield and he is not available to lecture on performing magic for children in January. Remember to tell them that this is an initial inquiry to see if attracting them is POSSIBLE and that that they can check this thread to see if the convention is actually going to happen. We'll talk fees and things when we have more solid details about the time and place.
For my part, The Magic Nook would definitely be interested. And while I am not able to attend, I would send a representative to host a booth and operate a computer link back to my site. Jim Gerrish just volunteered to give a "magic-making workshop", rather than a lecture. In other words, the participants would make Kid Show props right on the spot following his personal directions and be able to take home the stuff they made. It would be sort of like a Home Depot in-store class on how to build a deck on your house, except he would show how to build things you could perform in Kid Shows. I further volunteer to operate my computer during the convention to keep a live web-site open where those who, like myself, can only attend by proxy can see and hear and participate as much as the technology allows, using Yahoo Messenger chat, web cams, post digital photos as they come in, stream video feeds of lectures and shows to those who pay the admission, and make a PayPal access available for those who want to buy from dealers, get tickets to lectures, and so on. I will do my best to make this the first Universal Magic Convention available to everyone in the Whole Wide World through the World Wide Web.

May I also recommend that we consider the Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend (in 2008, that would be January 12-13-14) to include as many magician/school teachers and college students who have off because of the holiday.

Spellbinder,
It sounds like you are in touch with J.R. I would imagine he is planning this for NEXT January and not this upcoming January. Is that correct? Unless someone has a magic formula or spell for speeding up the process, I think if January is the month chosen, we have to be talking about January 2008. Since we aren't members of a formal magic organization and have to bring together diverse and sundry individuals to accomplish this, promote it, get registrants, dealers, lecturers, acts and make the first one a financial success (or there won't be a second), we need all the time we can get.

I am new here. Wher can I find more about it. Is it in magic mags? Sound great idea to me. We need another kids convention. Too many for adults, not enough for kids.

We're just getting started, Sorcerer. So far we THINK we have the location pinned down to January, specifically the weekend of the 11-12-13-14 of January 2008(Martin Luther King Jr's holiday in the USA, which means schools are closed and many goverment businesses, too), and somewhere in Phoenix, Arizona. The hotel is being looked into to get a good convention deal. We have encouraging verbal agreements from several potential lecturers/performers and at least three dealers.
When more is known, more will be posted.

Well, why should we let Jolly Roger make all the money? Why don't we ALL start our own kid show conventions.

This convention would not be held for the benefit of any one person. The planners, organizers and participants alike would get magic knowledge, experiences, new ideas, techniques and props. St. Jude's Children's Hospital would get the money taken in after expenses. http://www.tg.stjude.org
Local disadvantaged children and their families would be bused in to attend the afternoon and evening magic shows, providing us with real kids in the audience for a kids' magic convention, and we can provide them with an experience they will never forget. If, like us, that's your intention, then why not start your own kid show convention and be part of the solution? If starting up your own convention is too much for you to take on right now, get behind ours. Either way, it's well worth your time and effort.

I have to admit that I am most intrigued by the possibility of a warm weather venue during my downtime. Kidabra happens to be right in the middle of priome Busking time and I can't afford the time off then. And trust me, nobody, but nobody wants to be on the Halifax waterfront in January.
As for some of the preliminary concepts being bandied about... I think it might just fly.
