Looks like the Brits are coming........Look out U.S.A. Only Joking... However I have spoken to many close friends in this business and it is clear that January would be an ideal time for most of us. Mainly because January is the peaceful time after a busy Christmas, made our money.. Flights are cheaper and we get more dollars to the pound.

Carl:
I went searching around for air fares from London's Heathrow Airport to Phoenix Arizona, entering the dates for 2007 (they won't quote a price more than 11 months in advance) and found that the round trip would be $520 USD. Is that a reasonable fare for a trip like this, and do you know any ways we can get a better fare if we have a whole bunch of people signing up for a single flight in advance?

Does anyone know the average temperature in Phoenix in January? Not only would I like to attend a great get together with lots of new ideas, but I would certainly appreciate getting out of the freezing weather where I am.

Posted: Dec 7, 2006 4:31pm Nothing is final or set in stone about this convention... YET! However, as it begins to come together, you'll be able to find out the details HERE: http://www.magicnook.com/calendar/ridiculous.htm Stop back often to see what changes have been made. Help us make those changes by posting them here on The Magic Café in this thread.

Yes Spellbinder,
I too like the look of the web site too because it is my design you are spoofing, I created it for Marty Martini's Funarama. The design, the text wording (Except for the scarscam) and even the form all copied from me. You should know the form won't work because it is coded by me with a restrictive lock.

That's really weird those 2 sites are identical.
http://www.martinismagic.com/Funarama.html http://www.magicnook.com/calendar/ridiculous.htm Is that what you are talking about Dennis? Someone copied your work? This whole "convention" in Pheonix seems strange as there was a guy here named Jolly Roger who just suggested it last week as a "what if" and now we're ready to take orders for tickets? He hasn't even posted anymore about it since then, but it's got his name on it? This is all very weird. Caveat emptor! P.S. Ask Doc Eason, pro magician here at the Café, what happened to him on a quickly put together convention that was supposed to be down south a few years ago. You will hear a lesson learned! |

I think things are still at a 'what if' stage S&M, with people just tossing ideas around at the moment. Your input would be most welcome too. I certainly don't think any tickets are being sold yet. This thread was really taking off so lets not get negative again.
Dennis, I think the 'spoof' is a good natured one. At the moment planning is in the very early stages and obviously the page will be redesigned when anything concrete has been settled on. Nice work on the design though - I think the new convention would benefit greatly from your advice and experience.

Kimmo, I'm not the negative sort and I would like to see this conference succeed...however, starting out by stealing another site's copyrighted webpage design...and let's be honest, that's exactly what was done, does not instill a great deal of confidence. Not an auspicious beginning.

Guys, I don't normally do this but let me make a staff comment here. This is exactly what drove the orignal topic to destruction. Let's keep the subject matter to the actual convention details and ideas and leave the ethics and allegations out of it.

Thanks Dave. I agree. I'd hate to see this thread disappear as well.

Hello:
If you guys really do get something together, you're all invited over to my house, of course! Speaking of winter temperatures in Phoenix, I have not brought out my winter jacket in over 10 years now. Also, the Super Bowl is going to be here in 2008, so maybe you'll want to arrange the convention around then...or, maybe not. Let me know if you need any Phoenix information - I'm almost a native who's lived here 40 years now. Ron |

Thanks Ron, Phoenix sounds a lot better than Vermont in mid-January. I'm hoping that people are going to be able to put this together. I have learned much from every magic gathering I have ever attended and this one sounds like it may offer some different perspectives on our wide and varied art. I am really encouraged about some of the plans that have been talked about.
I particularly like the idea of having a charitable focus and having the performances benefit the children and help to bring them some joy into their lives. Oh, and Ron, do you mind if we raid your refrigerator around midnight next January? |

With Super Bowl here in January 2008, hotel prices will be at a premium.
I recall the last time we hosted the Super Bowl, visitors had difficulties getting a room. |

Note to self, avoid Super Bowl Sunday in Phoenix. Thanks Boppies!

Not to worry about rooms; Ron has generously offered the use of his house and we can all cram in there.
I officially and formally apologize for the parody of Dennis Michael's magnificent design for Martini's Convention. I only thought to use it as a model so I wouldn't forget anything important. The fault is entirely mine. I was in a hurry to get it on-line as soon as possible and didn't make the necessary changes. Thank you for putting up with my temporary piggy-back off your design, Dennis. Changes have been made and suggestions for further change are welcomed.

Good News: The 2008 Super Bowl is on February 3rd, so it shouldn't affect the scheduling of a convention around the second week of January.

Hey Danny! I don't know that I've ever posted in this forum. Anyway, having been a part of putting together the SEAM 2006 convention, I can tell you that it is hard work, and most of the time it will seem impossible work. I think you could definitely head a group for a convention. And, anything I could tell you from our (Ring 35's) experience that would help, I will, as will most of us involved that are members here. Just PM me.
I met Ken Scott in Atlanta a couple of years ago. You almost don't need to see the guy perform to know he's talent... especially in this field. I know he could also be a large help probably.... and Dan Fleshman too! I would have liked to have seen either of these guys at SEAM, but sometimes the cards don't/can't fall right. And a convention, from a planning standpoint, isn't rosey most of the time, but well worth the pay off in satisfaction of knowing that you've put something good together. And one of the best kept secrets in Kid's entertainment, believe it or not, is Michael Baker. PM him. Good luck! Jim p.s. Remember that not everyone will be pleased with dates, times, talent, hotels, locations, hair color, shoes, etc. |

Speaking of shoes, we're trying to get Paul Pacific involved in some way and he is definitely against shoes. One of the recent ideas under consideration is Lake Havasau, Arizona, where the London Bridge has been reconstructed, and a certain former British performer, who shall not be named, has mentioned that the town has quite a few British Pubs to visit.
Anyway,Jim, thanks for your offer to help. None of us in the organization group has ever put a convention together from scratch before, but we have other skills that may be put to good use if we combine them as a team. We'll be getting back to you and those you mentioned in your post.
