$275 will buy my family groceries for three weeks, which is why, right now, I have Bazar de Magia coppers that I got on ebay in August for $32.99.
(The price of those cups has about doubled since then.)

Ed, here's a few things I've learned about Cups and Balls here on the Café.
One is that guys like Bill and Jake know more about them than most folks will ever be able to absorb and their advice and suggestions are a real benefit of being here on the Café. Second is that RingsN'Things are making some great cups that you should at least aspire to own. And third is that if you want a nice set of cups that cost around $40.00 and aren't a rip off that you'll take heat for supporting, then be sure to take a look at the Morrissey cups. They're a great entry level cup and are an original design. There not perfect in many ways, but for $40.00 (or less) they're great. Try starting your search here: http://www.morrisseymagic.com/morrissey_closeup1.htm#mega and scroll down through the page.....look around a bit and you'll see some cups in your price range. |

I can think of only one four letter word that fits that sentence.

If you follow Cups and Balls, you absolutely know what the four letters in question are.
If you don't follow Cups and Balls, be assured that bragging at your local ring meeting about your fabulous set of Magic Makers cups will usually be greeted with a sneer followed by a snub (if not worse). Support guys like Jake who create, not those like MM who borrow to liberally (or blatantly rip off, depending on how strongly you feel about it). |

Ed... you have a set of cups. You say they are old. So? Can you do your routine with them? Do they feel right? My favorite cups (to use) are really old and one set looks like it's been through the wars... but it is a fun set to use. Sure, I have cups from Sherwood, Gazzo, Animal, Fox (the originals), R&T I, RNT II, and many many others (not quite as many as Palmer) but to use them I have just a couple of sets that feel the best and work for me... and they are old ones I got before I started to collect.

Pete,
Yes, I can do my routine with them and I have performed with them about 10 years ago. Recently have been brushing up on my routine using them. They, however, have been chipped, tarnished, and have gotten some mold on them from being stored for so long. I have cleaned them up as best as I can, but they are far less than attractive. Thus, I'm looking for a replacement set. I'd much rather perform with a new(er) set than the old and tattered set. I understand that some things look great when they have the older look to them... trust me, these cups do not fit into that category. Plus, as I've stated above, I'm looking for something small-hand friendly. I personally have never had a problem with the set I have, but if I could get something easier to grasp, that would be great.

Ed,
I wouldn't worry too much about the small hand thing. Gazzo has relatively small hands and he uses very large cups. I too have used large cups (Super Animals, as big or maybe slightly bigger than Gazzos) and it just requires a little change in technique. But to be honest, I gave them up in favor of a smaller (tennis ball size) set. My hands aren't necessarily small, it's just that they felt better. It wasn't necessarily the cup size, it was the comfort of manipulating the slightly smaller balls that made the difference for me. So you see, it's a subjective thing. You may buy some smaller cups only to learn that larger ones fit you better. Or the other way around.

Dave,
Oh, no. I'm not worried about having smaller hands. Like I said, the large cups work just fine for me, I've adjusted. But if I could manage a smaller set better, why not?

Ed, go to RNT II I have a set of Foxy II cups. They are small, they are heavy, they are so beautiful that they look like God Himself used them.
I like the triple rings around each one. Hey, I like everything about them - except for the size of the balls. They are a bit more expensive than the Magic Makers/Penguin, but the quality is much better and they are a lot less expensive than Johnson's. I would say that a Johnson is like a Mercury Grand Marquis, a wonderful ride. Foxy II's are like a ragtop Mustang - they'll take your breath away. |

The four-letter spelling would be DUHH. And there is also the variant DERR.

I only used Duh because I have flexed the language filter on the board so hard that I think I have covered just about every word you can't say on the Café`. Kudos to Steve for keeping up with me Everyone knows enough about MM to know they shouldn't refer them. That would be like you visiting the US and me sending you into the Desire Housing Project in New Orleans after dark, it's just not right. We try to keep people informed, but alas I've seen you win MM cups on ebay Walid, so you're supporting their business and the practices. Just to let you know, the cups you have from MM are about 58% Copper and 42% Alloy scrap. This is one reason they will flex out of round easily.

The biggest problem is finding quality metal at a reasonable price. Bazar can do it, because they are located near the source of much of the world's copper.

Yep, that and the added cost of shipping, fuel surcharges, etc. Not much room for overhead and mark-up even if you only needed a small return to break even on the project.
I have to buy some starter cups for a few young magician's and I don't personally care for the current inexpensive cups available; so I thought I'd plug the idea to Jake.

Greetings and Salutations,
I've been blessed to be able to acquire fine worker cups, Animals, Gazzos, Phoenix, which cover all of my outdoor/festival needs, and I also have a set of copper Biro's, Harries' Boscos, and Ireland/Palmer Commemoratives which I use when the situation arises. And right now, my nephew has my first set of cups, a set of combo Morrisey's. The Morrisey's are still in good shape and are perfect for a young magi who doesn't always stick to, well, anything, the fortunes of being 14, I suppose. But all this is besides the point. Unless and until you decide that the cups are for you, and obviously I have, get a set of Morrisey's -- although, if I had it to do over again I would have opted for the coppers, they are fine cups to learn with, play with, and they have the added bonus of having a CC in the set, they're light to carry, and have a neat little routine that comes with them. I'm thinking you can't go wrong with those for a young magi, or even an old magi looking to learn a new trick. Just my $.02 (USD) worth. YMMV Joe Zeman aka The Mage Ulysses |
