Hey guys , I'm looking for your assistance ..sharpish please. I know what the answer is but just need to confirm what advice I am going to give my friend.

I have recently become very good friends over the net with a lady in Michigan. we have chats about anything and everything. she is a single Lady, with three children not too well off and , I think very vulnerable.
She tells me she has been "chatting" on the net to a guy for a couple of weeks, all above board, and this guy says he wants to marry her. Says he has a car dealership and that he will buy her a BMW. Wants to come and ask her hand in marriage!.He told her will open a bank account in her name and put money in for her to use as she wishes.
She has just told me that yesterday she received a shipping bill saying he had paid $35000 for a car and it was on its way. Today she has received another letter from him saying that $2000 needs to paid to the shipping agent today for her to get the car. There is a tracking no on the shipping documents but...suprise suprise ..they have been blanked out.she says all correspondence comes from a co IAS ..mean anything.
Help me guys I know what you are going to say. I told her she can see on here what you say..her name is Karen..if you want to address her directly.
thanks guys

Oldest scam in the book - the Internet version of the 'found money' scheme where everyone has to pony up 'earnest money' for a split which is to be made later.

It's a shame these predators prey on the helpless and desperate like this. When they gouge some greedy moron, I think it's just Darwin at work. But when they go for a single Mom with problems, they ought to be hung up by... well, that's all I'll say.

Karen, Karen, Karen...

This is about the OLDEST scam in the world. Think about it. Someone wants to impress you by buying you a $35,000 car but needs you to pay the shipping???

Would you send someone ANY gift and expect them to pay for shipping??? This is tacky and you'd never do it. Neither would this guy as its a SCAM!

If you seriously think this is legit you need to see just how many times this has been done before. Call your local police department and ask to speak to anyone dealing in fraud. Tell that person the first part of the story and they will finish your sentence for you by saying..." They want you to send them money for shipping...right?"

Good Luck. I hope you're not one of those people who go for it anyway even after being warned and then have major regrets later as everyone you knew warned you yet you put faith in an " online pal" whom you've never met in person instead of your friends.

Best,

Tim

Wow...Classic scam! Good of you to help her out Howard!
Karen,
A guy that knows you (On the internet) for a couple of weeks buying you a brand new very expensive car? And he wants to marry you?
He has $35,000.00 to spend on a car for someone he has never met in person, but he can't get a plane ticket to come and meet you? Even if this is legit (Which it is not), he's kind of putting the cart before the horse. You meet a person, then you buy them things, then you ask them to marry you.
If he had the $ (Which he doesn't) it would have been better spent arranging a way to meet.
And what sort of fellow would buy ALMOST all of a magnificent present? "Here's your new car that I bought you baby...And it will only cost you $2000."
He wouldn't.
It is a scam to get your money. Big Time.
It's hard...You want to believe it is true. Some one you have never met, a successful businessman who wants to buy you things and take care of you. Wants to build a dream family.
And that is all that it is. He is a con.
If you need proof...What is the name of his Dealership? Where is it located?
Look it up on the net, call information, get a number for the car dealership that he owns. Call it. Ask the owners name. If it is the same name as the guy you are chatting with, ask if you can speak to him.
Have you ever been able to call this guy? Do you have his phone number? Or has he been the one to call you (If at all)?

You need to call the cops.
Immediately.

As for my credentials...I have a day job working in Internet Security, Phishing and other net scams. It is my job to watch for crud like this.
It is actually very common.
Best of luck, and DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY! SEND POLICE!

Karen, everything everyone above has said is true. Now, let's takeit one step further. After you refuse to send the money, this piece of scum (that's being quite generous, actually) will explain that it was all a mistake. Of course he always meant to pay the shipping. This company had no business sending you that invoice. What a mistake! Then...he'll offer to send you a cashier's check or money order for the $2,000.00...plus an extra $1,000.00 for you...to prove his intentions were honest! Just deposit the check and send a cashier's check for the $2000.00 shipping to the shipping company...on him! Keep the rest for your bills...and that's only the beginning. How can you say no? Right?

Then, when the cashier's check or money order comes back as a worthless counterfeit in 3-4 weeks, you suddenly owe the bank $3,000...plus bank charges. Just wanted to let you know that there is a "Plan B" to this little scam. Report this fool to the police NOW, darlin'!! Look out for her, Howard! Good friends like you are hard to come by!

Karen, PLEASE, don't walk....RUN AWAY FROM THIS GUY!!! for the following reasons:

1) He wants to marry you after only chatting on the internet "a couple of weeks"? Remember, on the internet, you can be whomever you wish to be! I've pretended to be a 24 year old man in a couple of magic chat rooms just to see how different they treat men and women in magic (but, that's another thread)

2) He wants to set up a bank account for you? Hmmm...he will need your NAME, ADDRESS, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER...not to mention other information. Can we say "identity theft"?

3) He has a car dealership and will buy you a BMW, and it appears that he's ordered a $35,000 car for you, but needs an additional $2000 to actually get the car. Why did he not offer to give you a car actually on his lot...no shipping charges. If this was legit, he wouldn't ask you for anything.

No man is worth the blow to your self esteem when it's discovered that you have been "had". This happened to me one time, but I only lost a couple hundred dollars...he decided I wasn't the right one for him when I told him I had no more money to give him. If you have already given him any type of personal information, please, please, please...check your credit rating!! I don't know how old your children are, but if they are still at home, under no circumstances should you let this man near you or any of your children! "To Catch a Predator" anyone?

There are decent guys out there....don't settle for anything less than the best!

Pete... just like spam... if the odds are " 1 in a million" that someone will fall for it and you send out 10 million emails in a day ... you have yourself 10 sales or victims in that day.

Seriously, glad to see she came around. When I think of people getting scammed and those three children... Hopefully a very sad situation has been avoided.

Yah dpe666. If he had just taken her money, he'd be OK in my book too.

BTW I wish I had asked you guys before giving Vandy my $2000. But he seemed so sincere. Smile

I am sincere. The car is on it's way. There are just a few paper work issues to clear up. These are very complex matters. Red tape, bureaucracy and all that. Be patient.
