While the effect is good enough on it's own, I've been trying to come up with that extra oomph to the trick, I knew what I wanted to do, but struggled for awhile trying to come up with the answer to accomplish what I wanted...
Well earlier today I finally came up with that answer... http://www.soundclick.com/pro/view/01/de......dID=3846 I'd really appreciate any opinions you guys have to give. Thanks. |

I'd prefer seeing you do it for someone vs. alone as shown. Also... you need to see Whit Hayden's video of his Chicago Surprise.

I like perfoming this effect as well. I forget were I learned it. I would try and speed up the overhand shuffle, and try a riffle F#$CE for the second selection. That way you can avoid a second d$%L.
I get to gaff some cool stuff for some cool people

I don't think it's actually titled "the best card trick in the world." I believe it's "Red Hot Mama." You can see it on Michael Ammar's ETMCM 1.

I think a lot of folks know it as "The Best Card Trick In The World". To date on YouTube, it has been viewed 4,015,796 times.
Take care Jason

What's the difference between "Red Hot Mama" and "Chicago Surprise" (I've also heard "Chicago Opener")?

I just wanted to know how the trick looked, I didn't know that it was already done like that so...sorry =P. |

No apology needed, man. I was directing the question more toward anyone who has an answer (I assume Mr. Biro will have a good answer) than at you specifically. I've heard different names used for this same effect and wonder if they are named for different variations and what the differences are if so.

I was under impression that it was called the "Chicago Opener" or "Red Hot Mama"..
I've only seen them performed with different colored backs. Blue to red : mama Red to blue : chicago.. That's the only difference I got from Micheal Ammar's video and Daryl's video.. Everybody has their own variations.. AAC, you could try to handle the cards more smoothly. other than that, good job on making your own variation. cheers PK

That's pretty ridiculous if it's true, PK. In that case, my ambitious card routine, done with red backs, is now going to be called "Aspiring Pasteboards" when done with blue backs.

I thought the invisible deck is called as the "the best card trick in the world." Maybe I am wrong! By the way it is a cool effect, I like it!

As for AAC, buy Card College Volume 1 if you are interested in card magic. |

WHOAH WHOAH - slow down guys!
Here's the real dope, adapted from a lengthy accreditation by Randy Wakeman. The trick that is doing the rounds on Youtube is commonly known as Red hot Mama OR Chicago Opener. It was developed by Al Leech (maybe basing it on earlier tricks) and called Red hot Mama. Frank Garcia popularised it in the 70s as Chicago Opener. So far as I can tell, they're pretty much the same trick with no relevance placed on whether its red-to-blue or vice versa. in 2000 Whit Haydn published "Chicago Surprise" which, while bearing many similarities to the above effect and is clearly a development of it, is actually quite a different trick (IMO). They are all, truly, utterly brilliant tricks when presented well. It is a real shame that some twats have exposed it on the internet, but hey...what's new? AAC - well done: I thought your handling was pretty smooth especially since you're new to the game. But what on earth made you think it needed extra "oomph"? Red Hot Mama is not one of the favourite effects of working card magicians for nothing. You put that first red card under their shoe or in their top pocket or wherever and when the change occurs there are few effects which pack a bigger "oomph"! Good luck in your progress, BTW! |

Trini Montes has an awesome variation called "Cajun Opener".
The first part of the effect is basically the same, but at the end - the original selection that was set on the table is turned face up and is NOT their card. Instead, it's a blank card with a message to "look in the box". They look in the card box and it's their second selection. I really liked it because I have a few friends who've seen me do a lot of the same effects and when I did this a few weeks back - it caught them by surprise. Trini uses a blank card for the message, but use a sleightly different handling that makes use of the jokers... Rudy |
