I've been out of magic for some time now, and I'm itching to get back in. Among other things, I did very well doing birthday parties and other kid events. I haven't touched any for about 20 years now, and not only did my props get old, but I did also. Are there any other old farts out there still doing the birthday thing? From the point of view of bookings, it seems to me that would be the easiest way to break into the business again.

I'm old (well, 45, but I feel older!), and I'm easing my way back into (what is for me) the hobby by doing shows for my own kids and their friends. I love doing it, but I'm not good enough yet to do paid shows.

How old is too old?
Usually when you say you're 45, but feel older! I know magicians 80+ who don't feel they are much more than 17 till they try something silly, like running upstairs or fixing the house roof. They're never too old. Just look at Billy McComb and what he achieved after he hit 80. I'm burying an 86 year old on Friday who was out working up to days before he went. And he's left a diary full of bookings. There's an old hunting adage in the UK - If he you ride your horse and look at the bottom of the fence, that's where you'll end up. Look forward, and you'll clear the fence. Try looking forward and saying I can and I will. Then, maybe you too will stand a chance of being there at 80+.

Jakeg,
No such thing as too old. It's like the saying about using old jokes. "There is no such thing as an old joke, there are just old listeners." I'm sure there are plenty of 5-years olds out there that have never seen one of your props or tricks. Put a new coat of paint on anything that will take it, polish all the metal parts, and replace any yellowing plastic or silks. Good luck, and welcome back. Derrick |

I'm 61 years old, and I plan to be a professional until they drag me off the stage. If you rest, you'll rust. Just update your props, and you are good to go. Get rid of that wooden thumb tip.

Find your character, play to your strengths, have fun, and give 'em a show they won't soon forget. A great resource as you get back into it, for kids performers, is "Seriously Silly" by David Kaye. Great material to make you think about your show. Yours aye, the seadawg

Can I do a magic trick while I'm laid out in the coffin?

Fifty-Three and still rockin' those 4-year-old parties! Heck, it's even easier now 'cause the kidlets and parents see me as a kindly grandfather stereotype.

I thought when they kneel down to pray, it would be a pressure switch turning on a motor that would reel up a thread, and my hand would rise in their face.
But, then, they just might expect something like that from me....I'm 60, and I still use many classics of magic.

Great posts, guys; thanks. My goal then is to update my routines, re-finish some of my equipment (I like the 'eye wash' of the mystic-looking props), make some new side tables, re-furbish my suitcase to table, and I'll be good to go. I still have to get rid of a lot of stuff, though. I can't believe that I bought some of this stuff.
