I exhibited at a grocery once...there was me, my zibit and some strippers.
Betsy(my zibit) made more money then the dancers! Brett.

Jeez, up here in Massachusetts we don't have strippers at grocery stores. Is this unique to North Carolina?

Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

Definately stores permission! Hit and run? haha...not a street performer. Was just testing before he went to a big meet next month I think. It was a Mexican store and the Mexican People just love the Zibits. Big Time! They know how to have fun and delve into mysteries. Especially the kids.

Just a funny thought:
We photographers use little remote strobe units, equipped with an optical slave. When they sense a flash, they fire. Place one of these in your showcase. If someone tries to take a flash photo, it will be overexposed beyond recognition.

I suppose you could put up a little sign that the burst of full-spectrum light from photo flashes deteriorate the exhibit.

I made a no photo policy this last season. It was always a struggle, sometimes a bit more than a struggle. No matter how you justify it people want to take a picture.
It gets a bit more interesting. Over the last year I have shown two other performers this zbit idea. Let's call them Don and David....combined probably close to 100 years outdoor show experience. Both with it. Both got zbits and took them out. Both insist that taking photos is the way to go. They tell me that people look at the picture and have to see it for themselves. They also say when people outside see everyone with their cell phones out it draws a bigger tip. One guy had a page 4 picture in the local paper at a fair and the next day (a Saturday) was his biggest day ever. These guys are both very show-smart. But then I did my own experiment last spring. I watched what happened when I allowed photos. In my experience I thought I lost about half the men and pretty much all the women. So, what to do? I don't think there is an effective way to stop photos. That idea of a flash is sooner or later going to **** off some drunk, if not someone else. This is a fun joint to run...no place for fights. I think we need to allow photos but only gently discourage it. This is unless Don and David are right and my own experiment was a fluke...maybe using the idea of telling them they can take photos to turn them, as these guys do, might be the way to go. Any more thoughts? |

Yeah...make it a non issue. Put a little sign up at the Zibit and leave it at that.
Like you said...a FUN thing to run...no beefs please. If you think you are losing the women, that's a problem since this show is designed to get them too...that's a lot of dollars walking away. How about... "That's one dollar please...no photos...thankyou...one dollear...no photos...thank you...yes one dollar...no photos..." Thanks for the stories Craig. So, you call them Don and David huh? Very creative.

Thanks Doug, I thought naming them Don and David would hide their secret identities. I must add that one of these guys now uses the zbit as his primary income source. The plan works and produces dollars.
I had one other thought. I have not tried this. There is a product that is designed to produce glare when a traffic camera tries to catch your plate. I wonder if it would have the same effect on cameras if sprayed on the zbit display aquarium. Even if it just distorted the pictures it might be effective. http://www.phantomplate.com This is one site... Thoughts? |

Could try it. Most phone and digital takers don't know how to adjust the camera on the fly anyway so it could work fine.
Glad david W. is still out there doing ANYTHING! Haven't heard from Dom for a long time. Hope he is well. Doug

Most phones don't have a flash...the ones that do don't use the traditional strobe either.
oh well. Brett.

Talked to Don way earlier this year...He told me he was getting a creature from you. Same with David. Haven't seen David in about five years, glad he's still kicking. What a history those two.. The story of pitch is right there with those two men...
amazing.. as for photos, well I already posted what we do earlier on this thread. Did kick out a punk kid in Carson City, almost had him arrested, only because he ran the gate to get the photo. He paid earlier and guess he thought it was unlimited privledges... Sometimes I take great joy in screwing with people...(sigh)... ciao |

I always allowed those who paid earlier to go in as many times as they wanted during the day. Most often they would bring their friends and those kids who came back were usually fun to talk to and had a genuine interest. Never had anyone 'bust' in on purpose or just walk in to take a photo though. But like I mention in the How-To...there are those who really might not know there is a charge and at least deserve to be told politely before the hammer comes out. Not that you didn't Jeff...I mean in general.
Those who have my plan and follow it's words and are successful can follow the words in the above post I made as well. Play it by ear...you might win in certain situations. If you find you are being taken advantage of by pea brained punks, take care of it the old fashioned way but remember, I never had a single beef. I attribute that to not asking for it and treating the customers no matter who they were with respect and a sense of fun...I was prepared if they didn't give it back but I was almost always bigger than them. haha. And Jeff you are too! The difference is you do it every day for a living and after awhile I'm sure there is a point where you can only take so much and be 'so nice' before you want to brain the little bass turds. Ah the joys of a full season.

Most definetely a full season can get under the skin. Sometimes there are beautiful people and sometimes there are just absolute punks. In the above situation, (if my mind can even remember back to last May), the -punk ran in laughing, almost tripping over my cane...and yelled, "I got it!" Well that got my goat---sooo, I decided to call security... which was a grand little old Dame in a golf cart... She had the kid stammering and what not, like how can you screw with grandma.
Now of course we get folks that just ignore the plethora of signs indicating the admission price. And I take the tack of gently telling folks that we want them to see the exhibits, but that there is an admission price. And just about all of those folks pay and go in...You know they are at the fair and get all excited and all. So I no longer beat them over the head with a two by four. Now the ones I like are those that walk all the way up to the entrance, crane their necks in as far as they can and look around.. When invited in at a price, they all say, No thanks,. SO I reply, well, you came all this way, etc... Now Doug, either you are getting a bit old and no longer remember the knocks, or society has changed considerably over the years. I am leaning towards the later. SOme of the fairs we have been doing for more than a decade have had their clientle change from the beautiful to the legions of hell. Of course we have had conversations about this in the past. But its getting ugly out there these past several years. There is at least one fair that we are dropping due to the changing demographics from those who want to have a good time to those that want to make problems... Now this year I began a birdfee program. At every fair there are a couple of kids that fall in love with the "Strange Thing" (Some oldsters too!) And they come in once, twice three times a day. Now my standing policy is that if you were in earlier in the day, then its fine for the day. So when the kid wants to keep coming in during the fair, I tell em, Bring a couple of friends and I'll keep letting you in... It works. Regarding photos. This year I had a man who kept coming in during the run of the state fair. He would bring friends, etc. He would always offer to pay, so most of the times I would let him pass..anyway on the last day he brought in a sketch artist due to our no photo policy. He asked if it was okay,,,,Though for a second and said yes, but that somewhere in the artwork, "America's Smallest Travelling Museum" needs to be written. Don't know if that ever happened. We had a guy who agonized for several days before coming in. He was working at the fair (AZ State Fair) as temp ticket taker...Anyway, he had this Samuel L. jackson kinda look and told me he was an ad hoc crypto-zoologist and strted yakking in my ear for 30 minutes on a SUnday night--couldn't shake him...I usually don;t like talking with patrons for more than three minutes, ya know what I mean? Anyway, he went on and on and on and on...THen left. He really wanted to see the chupacabra. Finally after about a week he FINALLY comes in... It was worth the wait. He KNEW that it was real, based on all of his study of the creature... He eyes got Real Big! and well, you know, I had that silent smile... That's when this business is worth it... When you have delivered the entertainment goods.... Happy New Year Everyone... |
