Any tips or suggestions on making/ installing a topit?
What material(s) are good to use? How low to the edge of the jacket should it go? How deep? Is it worth the extra work to be able to reach into it from your outer jacket pocket? Derek Merdinyan |

There is a company out of PA. that sews topits for as low as $50.
There's also a company in las vegas but they charge above $150 when I have time I'll post there #'s |

Follow the pattern for the one you want to use. I have made and used the Ammar toppit in my work. Once you use the principle, the item itself can be made with a hanky and some safety pins.

The article is called "Tote Bag Change Bag" and it includes the Tote Bag Topit. Apparently some readers of this thread got lost and thought it was all about Change Bags, but the article includes much more than that.

I was about to pop you an email the other day... I couldn't find it!
I did make a temporary topit which I loosely sewed in to play around with. Its lots of fun Derek Merdinyan |

I see you've figured out my big secret, Derek. Play! I love to play around with props and ideas. If you go get a Tote Bag and begin to play with it, thinking of it as a Topit, you probably don't need the results of my own playing around which resulted in that section of the Article. However, I've put in a lot of overtime playing with the Tote Bag, so you might find some other ideas in the article you can use. But that is the big secret. Play! Magic is first and foremost- FUN!
I'll bet by now you can answer the same questions you asked on your first post in this thread... all from playing.

The best top it's on the market today are those installed by Lynetta Welch at Fabric Manipulation. She put in three of mine and they're amazing. go to fabricmanipulation.com and check it out. She can customized them to almost anything, jackets, shirts, leather jackets (which is where mine is) and more I'm guessing. It's a very good investment if you're serious about top it work.

The title here: "Home Made Topit" caught my eye. Topit was not the factor.
The part I wondered about is how many people realize that the first of whatever is "Home Made"! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- It reminds me of a Thomas Edison quote: "Finally I ran out of things that didn't work." |

Snowboarding Jackets make the best impromptu topits. They have a snow guard in the jacket that you clip around you.
Not what you're looking for, but when I saw home made topit made me think of this. |

Don't overlook using a pattern for a game vest! (Like dove hunters use...)

There are a lot of discussion topics on the Magic Café on buying a topit or making a topit , so use the Search function. Many prefer to have it installed into a jacket by a seamstress. If you use the same clothing for all performances this is fine , but for casual use you can use one that simply pins into the jacket. A master of the topit , Patrick Page, famously used a very simple version that is attached with pins. The one called Topit 180 by David Penn is transferrable to different jackets. It is very light-weight material. |

You can buy what they call rip stop material or parachute material at the fabric store. It does not absorb moisture and when it is cut it does not fray. Very durable and comes in different colors. It is also very flexible but yet not flimsy. Think umbrella material! Very similar and you could also use umbrella material.
