I know this is an old effect, but I was just curious, and wanted to know what you think about me adding this effect into my manipulation show.

If you do a kids show-I'm thinking pf purchasing Abbots trick where you have 3 silks-red blue and green-put them in a tube, toss them in the air and out comes an umbrella thats red blue and green-Josh
If a magician is not intending to "trick" a spectator, why is every "trick" called a magic "trick"?

w3irDO,
Umbrellas are an excellent item to manipulate, and there are actually some on the market now. Well, I think there's one on the market anyway. I wish someone would put out oriental style production umbrellas, but for now they do have red/white and blue/white ones. They're a bit pricey, but an excellent effect. Sable

JSMagic, the trick you just described, I already have it. What I'm saying here is the production of 5 umbrellas under three empty silks. By the way thanks for your info Jeb.

Dick Oslund has a nice handling for the Umbrella Production in one of his lecture notes. It's so easy to do now with these newer automatic umbrellas that fold-down to about 8 inches.

You could also have a cobbler sew/craft a brightly coloured foulard and load the umbrellas in place of feather flowers in the four corners to produce in your show....
Load the umbrellas with coloured mylar confetti and produce brilliant rain as well.... very simple indeed....! Best o' luck! |

Check the dollar stores. They often have small cute umbrellas you can easily gimmick yourself.

I have used several of the dollar store type umbrellas and just replaced the cloth covers with some made from shinier cloth. For the big beach size finale, I sewed the shiny cloth panels right on top of the existing cloth to preserve the strength of the original cover. Non-self opening ones are easily modified with elastic and an eyehook.

Fukai is the man when it comes to umbrella productions. He has a tape available in Japanese that has an umbrella production and an umbrella split. As for creating your own methods for production of umbrellas, you have to do three things. First hide the umbrella in an unsuspicous hidden location. Second acquire the umbrella secretly. Finally produce the umbrella in a MAGICAL way.

Joe, could you please post a source for the Fukai video?

I bought it at an auction. I don't speak Japanese, so I have no idea what he is saying. I cannot read the title or the credits. Sorry.

Get in touch with Shimada, he used to perform parasol productions along with mask effects. Reminds me of Jeff McBride, hmmmm inspiration for Jeff perhaps?

Can you please kindly point me to the right direction to get the useful DVD or lecture notes to learn Fukai's routine?
Many thanks!

Joker Lam instructional video "Parasol Anywhere" will tell you all you need to know to put together your own routine.
I don't think Fukai would like you copying his act. |

Hi Guys,
I don't know of how much help you will find this but, I once had an in depth conversation with Fukai about his dancing cane. He suggested that with things like this that you can buy his videos in Japanese for the use of his props. He said this accomplishes 2 things. 1. He knows how they work best as he designed them over years and.. 2. As you can't understand a word he is saying unless you speak Japenese, it means that you have to pay even more attention to what is going on, allowing you to learn as much, but work for it. I personally think he is dead right, but that is just my opinion. Hope that this helps some...
