I was going to get some multiplying balls. Which ones should I get. I like the glitter ones. There the ones with the sparkle mirror finish to them. Does anyone have them. Are they hard to work with

It sounds like your talking about the Vernet balls. I had a set a few years ago and they suckkkkkk! Get fakini

Fakini are the best made today.
The classic red or white wood balls are great too. The magic is in the manipulaton not the glitz. My two-cents, Walt |

Add another two cents in favor of Fakini balls. I don't necessarily agree with Graham's assesment of Vernet, but there is certainly a noticeable difference between these brands.
Check out... dennymagic Personally, I like the 2" balls. Best of luck! |

Trouble with Fakini is you basically have to buy their hundred dollar dropper as the way the balls feel, they hardly ever work smoothly with regular droppers. But I have seen people make those cheap empire magic golf balls look just as good.

The hundred dollar dropper is relatively new. People, myself included, used Fakini balls for years before the dropper was invented. If you don't need a dropper, then the point is mute.
BTW, I used a dropper I got from Hank Lee many years ago and it works fine with Fakini balls if you use the 1 3/4" balls. When I started using the 2" ones, I made my own dropper out of material with a satin liner. The silicone balls slide well against the satin. Just a thought.

I have had a billiard ball magic obsession going back to age 9. And trust me, that's a while ago! The downside on the Vernet sparkle plastic balls is that they are so light. I think they weigh less than a marshmallow! Couple that with the fact that while those little glittery bumps can dig into your fingers and help you hold on to them, if you do any ball and silk moves, the little bumps get stuck against other surfaces. I didn't like them very well mainly due to being too light.
The Fakini's are wonderful. You don't need the ball dropper if you use other tactics for your loads, etc. They are farily heavy in weight. I use them and the Fakini eggs as well. My favorite, however, is regular wooden multiplying balls. The weight is perfect, they look great in any color or design you want, they are affordable, and they work very well with ball and silk, droppers, etc. In the words of the toy industry: collect them all.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

Amen to UFO.
Vernet are useless, they you can't steal them. Fakini are almost as bad, you can't steal them. If you don't use droppers then you're stuck with table steals, which trying to go over 4 with is rather unmagical, and trying to do the rest with substitution steals is also rather unmagical. Also Fakini balls won't slide over each other which takes a bunch of moves out of your arsenal. "Oh, but you can bounce them for misdirection" I can hear you cry, but you can throw balls for the same misdirection. Also, throwing a ball up and catching it back between your fingers is far more impressive (and not that hard... try it, you can get them really quite high) Real Billiard Balls are too hard for the beginner, I still can't work with them, I've only seen one man who can, and he won a 3rd Prize at FISM... So I'd say go with the wooden balls. Why? Lots of reasons: Burlinghull droppers made Billiard ball work (also Buckinghams coin dropper is great for stealing 2 at once), and they'll only work with the wooden balls. As a side note, it is important that your droppers are completely black under your tails/jacket so there can be no flash of the balls, so check what kind of dropper you can use for the balls you buy. When your balls are old and dirty, or if you want to change the colour of them for what ever reason, the only balls you can paint yourself are the wooden ones... They grip very well with a good finish on them, and a little resin on your hands makes them perfect. Also, they don't grip too well, if you know what I mean, they will slide over each other, silk and material, and you if needs be. Manipulations hayday was back in the early part of the 20th Century, and those guy's used wooden balls, and I think they knew what they were doing, (plus if you want to study balls, then you have to study these guys, and they made all the moves to do with their wooden balls.) There is an arguement that if you bounce the ball, then people will know that it is rubber and therefore know that it grips well so your magic isn't so impressive. Personally, I think that if your audience is concerned with that, then you've got more to worry about than what your balls are made out of! However, if you drop a wooden ball it makes an impressive thunk, and shows that the balls are very solid, hard and real. Dropping the ball is also great misdirection for a steal, my favourite being with tape on the bottom of the shoe. (and it gives your more time than a bounce). So buy wooden balls, they're hard to find, but worth it. Also, please buy balls of a decent size, I get fed-up of seeing people make tiny balls appear between their fingers, and it just isn't impressive... size matters! Oh, and have fun practicing, it's a long hard road putting together a good ball routine, lots of problems to be solved, they're much more rigid than say card manips, but they are so much fun. Paul |

Thanks Paul. Where in the UK have you been able to obtain suitable wooden balls?

I went to Faust the Magician (Granville Taylor), he was one of the last great touring illusionists, he also makes props. http://www.taylormademagic.co.uk/
He's not cheap, but I couldn't find anywhere else, and they are marvelous. He makes his balls at 48mm, and he will do you any number of balls, shells and loops you want in red and white, maybe other colours too, I don't know. He's also owns one of the only two De Biere billiard ball dropper systems in the UK, a method I've heard wonderful things about, but sadly have never seen. All the best, Paul |

I don't believe the original question had anything to do with which ball sucks.
The choice is yours. What is the style of your show? Which balls are you capable of handling without dropping? Most working professional use Fakini's. I started out with a basic set of red lacquered billiard balls, then moved on to a set of tournament golf balls (Fakini). If you like glitter balls use them. You could use fishing bobbers, golf balls, billiard balls, eggs, gem stones and so on. Use what works for you.

Yeah, Im just starting out in magic. I wanted something that's pretty good in size 1 7/8 to 2 inch. I thought the Vernets looked cool. That is just my opinion. My local magic shop has them. Not sure how much they are. Shouldn't be more than 20.00 or so. I will keep you guys posted what I get.

I used and loved using the Vernet balls for years. I still perform with them up to this day. The grip is easy and they get gasps because of their unique look.
I have just purchased my first set of White Fakini 1 3/4 inch billiard balls and these are a dream come true. As much as I like the Vernet balls, I intend purchasing a 2 inch set of Fakini balls and will eventually omit the Vernets all together. It's not because I don't like Vernet balls - it's because I simple prefer Fakini balls. They give me that fresh feeling of smooth manipulation. Dani |

One gripe about Fakini's- the red balls are pink. Why can't they make em' in Red!
