Where can I get some awesome old magician posters. I'm looking for the real thing not replicas. I seen a few on ebay that went for around 200.00. Which I guess isn't bad. I know Nelson has them anywhere else

Hi Scott:
Are there posters you have seen that interest you? The really old ones can be extremely expensive. What time period are you looking for? Do you have a favorite magician? Having answers to these types of questions can really help you to narrow down your choices. And, of course, it helps to know in advance what you can afford, or how much you want to spend on any single poster. Hope this helps a little bit. Happy hunting! Clay |

I like the 3 stone lithagraph posters. I like a lot of the old keller blackstone ect from that era. I know there a lot of money. Where can I find some of the older ones without paying a are and a leg. I think the poster from that time period are really cool. Im not a collector. I just was looking for a few to hang up. I know the reprints are around 100.00 where can I get those

Scott, welcome to the world of collecting! When you say 3 stone lithos, do you mean 3 "sheet" stone lithos or 2-4 color stone lithos?
A 3 sheet stone litho of Keller or Thurston (the blue portrait one) goes for around $9,000 on average. But then again, you can get an 8 sheet Carter for $450. Depends on the magician. Chung Ling Soo has some of my favorite lithos, but are way out of my price range. I'd check on Norm's site. He has several lesser known magicians that aren't too bad. I think the George posters are around $200-$400 for a single sheet (full color stone litho). He's got one or two posters that looks just as rich as the Thurston's. Carter's windows cards would be a good start. There are two, Weird Wonderful Wizard and Carter Beats the Devil. I bought both of mine when they were around $75 at the Egyptian Hall auction. I think they are around $175 or $200. I'd grab one or both of these as they are smaller (and less expensive to frame!) and look very nice. In the end, it's not what the poster is worth, but do YOU like it? If it's a poster that YOU like, then it's priceless. I have some no-name magicians that are just BEAUTIFUL. And even two-tone posters can look good. Two of my favorite two tones are the Newman Seance single sheets. Hope this helps! Scott |

Thanks for the insight. Is there any online auctions that are selling them. Thanks for all your help. I tried ebay they did have any. Are they listed as lithos or something else. I looked under magic supplies. None came up

Uncle Harry's don't run cheap either. I don't even have one of those. But there are a lot of reprints of his at very reasonable prices and look nice for hanging. I've got 4 or 5 in the $10 range for that purpose, just do a search on the net, I got these at a local brick and mortar store. I don't think just for decoration that I would fork out the money for the collectible originals, expecially the stone liths.

Hi Scott
Try the next Martinka auction... The posting from ScottRSullivan was spot on...Carter and George Posters are good value. I started with the George and Carter posters...my advice is be patient, get to know the market and only buy what you like. Regards Scott |

Did I read this post right? Three Scott's in one thread!
Scott Penrose is right about being patient. It seems like there is a lull in the magic litho market right now. Which might work in your favor in that prices "might" either start to drop (unlikely) or at least slow in their rise in price. But, yes, just be patient. Check eBay from time to time. Try doing searches for specific magicians. Sometimes there are many up for sale, sometimes none. And when all else fails, you can alway's buy one of Norm's replicas. I've seen them and they look wonderful. Not technically an original, but he sells some that most of us can only dream of owning. Warm regards, Scott |

You might want to try getting to a MCA
(Magic Collectors Association) gathering. There are booths of exhibiters selling collectibles and many of them bring many size lithos. the next one is May 3-7 back where it belongs...in the chicago area.

Does anyone know for whom this poster was designed? And who the artist was, publication date and location, etc.? Thanks.

You can write Quicker than the Eye (Potter & Potter) regarding the artist and date, and perhaps the printer. They've always been helpful to deal with, at least in my experience.
It wasn't designed for any single magician however, if it was a stock poster. It would have been designed for resale to the magic market where any B-list or C-list magician could purchase a quantity and run it through a press to imprint his name, and the date, time, and location of his performance run. This was a cost effective way for a less-famous magician to have quality marketing materials. A-list magicians would have their own personal posters and window cards produced. I welcome any corrections if I'm not accurate.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
