I so hate to bring about questions of Derren Brown and his methods, but one of his "effects" has me intrigued. In an episode of "Trick of the Mind," Derren places a trailer before the film "Ocean's 11" that supposedly gets people to forget the movie that they've seen (and post-show interviews "prove" it worked for most). Also, in the televised stage show "The Gathering," he purportedly places subliminal bits into the performance that lead to his audience being unable to recollect what transpired in the theatre.

Now, I think I suffer from entertainment amnesia and think it's possibly a universal thing. Moments after exiting a live performance, I have trouble remembering exactly what happened. I only know that I enjoyed it. I assume that half the effect relies on this concept.

My question is...what do you all know about this kind of suggestion? (I posted this in the hypnosis forum because it seemed a good fit. Move it as is necessary.) Is it real, or is it more phoney cover up for something sneaky? If it is, what kind of knowledge is needed to reproduce the stunt, and where can it be attained?

Being in the US, it is very difficult for me to comment on his work because we don't get to SEE it over here.

Sorry.

Scientifically speaking, the jury is still out on the efficacy of subliminal messages. While the possibility exists that it worked just like they said it did, I suspect there's some clever trickery afoot. As to the nature of the trickery itself, I can be no help.

In the case of Derren's performance, the old dual reality principal is at work.
The film is just an explanation meant to throw you off and to provide a solution for laypeople to grasp on to.

Andini,
Most likely NOTHING is at work! If you are telling an audience this on a regular basis, the natural phenomena and order of things is that someone is going to forget anyway, plain and simple. Praise goes to Derren for being clever enough to capitalize on this, and take credit for it.

It is an easy matter to cause people to "forget" all types of things. It is a combination of suggestion, confusion, interruption, boldness, and opportunity. Brush up on the pattern interrupts taught within most NLP models. I believe this is where you should start in re-constructing such an effect, not within magic and mentalism per se, but within psychology and the human behaviour.

Also for these purposes, Group Mind Dynamics and studies on mass hysteria are going to be worth their weight in gold here.

Personally, I really like for people to REMEMBER my shows, performances, and demonstrations. Smile

Regards,
Jerome.

But if the whole audience forgets, just think of how many tapes you'll sell! $$$

That's the problem. The whole audience is not going to forget. It is impossible. Details and bits of information may become skewed; thought patterns and processes may be interrupted and re-formatted; suggestions could be instilled and even illusion could be incorporated to help support the "belief" and experience of forgetting; but this is still not the case.

Even if it were, think if YOUR OWN claim to fame was, "Everybody forgot my show."

P.S. A good performer is going to sell tapes anyway.
As a ruse, it has some appeal; as a concept, it is probably somewhat finite in potential. Applying it to something different could have a much greater effect.

If memory serves they only interviewed two people who said they forgot the show. At least that's all they showed on the youtube video which I'm assuming is what you saw since your in Chicago.

Hmmmmm... so what if five (say) people are hypnotised (pre-show, and perhaps even by a hypnotist more experienced than the presenter?).
Then the performer/presenter (in this case Derren) says near the end of the show that: "Some of you, when asked at the end of this show, as you are leaving the building, will simply will NOT be able to remember exactly what went on. You're minds will simply be blanked, in some way."
Then at the end of the show as the audience are leaving, the interviewer (member of the same production company of course) asks at random (ahem) five people as they are leaving: "What did you like about tonight's show?... yaddyaddyady.

Well? What d'ya think?

Forced forgetting, huh?

I dunno if it is a technique one would want to practice... I mean... I have seen lot of forgetable acts, movies, etc. over the years... How hard can that be... ;-)

(god I hope no-one sees the footage of me when I was 6! LOL)
