Horace Marshall used to import these from Germany and you will see it listed in his early ads in the 1930's.
Birch had a great photo taken by Maurice Seymour of it as he featured it. Besides the difficulties of getting the bulbs, the price of canaries went too high to continue to do this. Canaries are not the hardiest birds for doing this type of effect. Stephanie Griswald did this effect at Abbott's maybe 15 or 20 years ago. She used apparatus made by Walter Shepard. It is a hard effect to see without the proper staging and lighting in a big venue. It is more of a parlor effect. I am sure that Virgil and Birch figured out how to light and present it. David..interesting notes on the Virgil bulbs. Richard

Alright .. let's get back to the subject at hand. Has anyone tried replacing the bulbs with a new LED version of a 12" bulb? I've seen a few things online but, I'm not sure if they will work out with this illusion.
If you check out the video on JC Sum's home page, you'll see he's got an old Sommer's Lightbulbs Thru Girl using some sort of blue LED bulbs. It looks very interesting. Steve |

I didn't know they have LED versions.
But I should be surprised. I can't imagine it not working and lasting much longer. LEDs are super bright and clear to begin with. They take much less power too. Do you know how many LEDs are in the 12" bulb? I know that some of our LEDs have only 3-6 and are super bright already. I would think as long as it is a 12" tube light it should work no matter. I think color LED would be actually awesome with the illusion.

I idea with the LED was not to line a hollow tube with lights but to use a Plexi Rod and have an LED shining on the end, this causes the light to travel down the solid Plexi and illuminate the rod. This is what he meant by giving the example of the Fiber Optics comparison.
This would mean having to redesign the socket area with LED lights and possibly thread the Plexi to screw into the new socket. |

Now that doesn't sound like it would be that hard to do. |

This would also save on burnt legs and ruined pantyhose.
I think that this approach might be a money saver all around, plus make the unit safer. |

Not sure if you can view this but these are photos of JC Sum's LED lightbulbs through girl on his Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/#!/album.php?aid......96822922
It is very bright and looks like rows of LEDs in one tube. |

Very cool .. this is exactly what I was talking about. Nice work by the JC Sum crew. I never thought a Sommers prop could look so cool.
Excellent work by my friend euroillusion. I've seen some clips of the illusion online but, that's about it. Thanks for the link ... Steve |
