How practical is an ungimmicked 3 fly routine in terms of angles..can you be surrounded 180 degrees or do you need to be head on..
Also the sources I've been looking into are Kenner's book Out Of Control and Daryl's 3 Fly DVD. Are these good routines to start off with? Again I don't want a gimmicked version. Also I've been reading it is best to use "soft" Morgan coins...I'm assuming these are dull coins that don't talk as much as newer ones? Do most coin shops carry them or would I have to soften them myself? Thanks in advance. |

Don't forget R. Paul Wilson's Crowded Coins. He's the special guest this month. Without gaffs you can get away with 3-Fly moves with people on either side of you. However, you need to keep to coins closer to your chest and still be conscious of the angles.

Check out Retro Fly on the New York Coin Magic Seminar COINS ACROSS DVD, (now on special sale in the DVD for sale section) until the 17th).After that you will need to buy from the web site, http://www.newyorkcoinmagic.net You won't have to use soft morgans, the angles are good, and you finish clean. No gaffs.

Sorry, I considerably messed up in my above post!!
Erm, although it's not really a 3 fly thing, PH's PHQ #2 moves 4 coins from one hand to the other beautifully. |

There are tons of 3 fly routines out there by numerous people here on the Café. Check em out. They probably have links in their signatures. HAHAHA
As for your question...it really depends on the version that you do. And how you manage your audience. How far away you are from the spectators will also be a judge as to whether or not you will expose the method. NOT TO MENTION the use of misdirection. You can flash hardcore as long as they are not looking there you would be okay. NOT a method that I prescribe, however it is a truth. C |

It kind of depends on how far away your audience is and whether they are sitting as in a parlor performance or right next to you when you do closeup.
From there, angles dictate some choices in methods and "procedure" as to how you hold your hands. What is your performing situation?

Although it's gimmicked, the most powerful and magical 3 fly routine I've ever seen is Garret Thomas's "GT 3fly". It's the absense of moves, and even of the hands going near each other, that makes it so shocking.
Ungimmicked 3fly? I use Apollo Robbins "Trapeze Trio" from Cultural Exchange- it's simple, and gets the job done. You get a good 180 degrees, so long as everyone is "near" you (you can perform it to a group on the street). Scott. |

If you really want to start knucklebusting, I love the cleanliness of kainoa's edge grip "another flipping three fly" it can be found in his coins on edge book or his NY Coin Seminar DVD's

My advice to you is to modify the routine to your own liking. Yes, a VCA, or 3 Fly can be done at a 180 degree radius. You just need to modify the sleights to meet these conditions. Try utilizing the Finger Palm, Edge Grip and Nowhere Palm. This is what I did and I have great success with my routine.

Thanks for your everyones input..im still a bit undecided..
I'm leaning toward kenners book totally out of control..ive read there are some good effects in there..along with the 3 fly.. I'm going to stop by a coin shop how do I distinguish good morgans for this routine? I'm assuming the older the better? |

If there are very large chunks taken out of the edges, you might not be able to use the coins effectively in conjuction with an ex[ should you choose to do so later on. Also, it's nice to have coins that still look like morgan dollars, not just discs of silver. Patina is the darkish stuff that collects around the edges of coin designs. You'll have to decide whether or not you like it. Personally, I like it, because it highlights the features of the coins, even though they're soft. My advice would be to find coins that are soft enough that they make no noise other than just friction when rubbed together, but still look like morgan dollars should look, which is aided by patina. Also, if you're picky enough, and they have anough coins to choose from, Try and find the same dates. Personally, I don't care whether the dates change during an effect, but some are purists I suppose. |

Hmmm... honestly - that didn't "satisfy" me at all. While I can see the effort and skill involved, there were just too many suspicious moves to make it believable for me - especially that last "pocket" sequence.
Then again, I've been working recently on Kohler's Ultimate 3 Fly, which is super clean... unfair comparison I suppose! No doubt the impression is different for a layperson... |

The Mark Mason offering with TWO gaffs (though not cheap) does manage all but the last transit about as cleanly as you'd like. That last coin vanish is its own problem and anyone whose explored using a holdout and don't mind carrying the coins in their LEFT JACKET pocket will have enough clues to know what to do from there. And yes, the last coin solution offered by Kohler, when augmented by the slightest bit of EG work does work beautifully.

The version which I perform is daryl's although I use a mark mason handling for the second coin flight which I found got me better reactions.
having said that I've altered nothing else and daryl's teaching on the dvd is first class. |

Hello,
With all this 3 Fly stuff constantly floating around, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Troy Hooser's routine from Silver Surf 2, called Three Fly Experimentation, First Method and Second Method, especially Second Method. Any thoughts as to likes or dislikes on this particular handling? Jim |
