For a while, I've been interested in learning some mentalism. I'm now getting to the stage of being really rather interested, so am spreading out into this area.
However, I would like some advice. I'm competent with cards, and am gaining skill with coins. Especially with cards, I know a lot that I can tweak slightly to change the theme a lot. I have a few questions to ask:
Thanks for reading through all of this, I look forward to some decent advice! |

1) Watch as many mentalists perform as you can, and read the important mentalism books.
2) There are a lot of threads about the issue of keeping magic and mentalism separate or not. Many successful performers do combine both, however. 3)Aside from Corinda and Anneman, TA Waters Mind, Myth and Magick is simply brilliant. 4) Good luck!

[*]Since I'm already known as a magician, it would be possible to just drop mentalism into any other routine. I do a quick trick that I'll either show as a prediction, a mind read or an experiment of memorising the pack, and I've started doing a trick that is in effect a whittled down version of the invisible deck. However, in your opinions, is it better to keep magic and mentalism separate? In Teach Yourself Magic, the author suggests that mentalism and magic should be kept separate. I've not made up my mind yet, so would like some other opinions (even if they are not opposing opinions). I tend to agree with the author. But there are many magician out there that will swear up and down that they can do both. As if it's an insult to suggest they can't do it. Which is not the case. It's just that as a magician (a known one in your case), mentalism plays very weak compared to the visual effects of magic your audience is expecting. Do a search for New to Mentalism topics. |

Just get an Outlaw wallet. Learn to P.W. a simple birthdate 12-28
As a kicker at the end of a magic close-up set say to the group "I'm senseing that someone hsas either just had a birthday or there is a birthday in the near future. Ask the month and day. Pull out your Outlaw a take one card out and hand it to the spec. Tell them to turn it over. There is the date on the back of the card. It kills. Yeah blatant promotion for my wallet, but what can I say? It kills. RR |
