Howdy, Boss!
Well, here's a thought. How many folk out there work in various temporal zones? You know, Renaissance, Colonial, Old West, Swing Era, 50's/60's Lounge - further more - people who work character based performance - gypsy, pirate, cowfolk, space alien, politician - whatever - how about a subject header for us to delve and wander in? Just a thought. Kd  |

I agree this would be nice and cast my vote in favor.

This all sounds very interesting. What other things do you feel would fit in with this?

I can see it functioning as a sounding board for other character-driven performances...
A place specifically to ask questions pertaining to 'in period' situation; script writing/patter advice in genre; tips on specific costuming (that would probably get lost amid the "Clothes we wear" forum)... Basically a single location that would encapsulate all of the issues that this type of performance would generate... My .02... Happy New Year All!! Prof. Piper (Terry)

Hi Steve,
The Once Upon a Time and Bizarre Magic categories have served well as a catch-all for this, but it might be nice to have this niche. In theatre classes they call this "Periods and Styles" (of acting), So maybe "Periods & Styles of Magic" would be a broad enough theme title. I see more and more magicians concerned with creating a specific Character, or creating work for a particular venue. This would be a natural fit for what I do and what my interests are. My only concern is that there are soooo many categories all ready, and sometimes it hard to know what to check out or where to post. Magically, Walt |

I like the idea...If it goes up...I guarantee I'll be posting there!
Yes...The Bizarrist forum is very helpful for these types of acts, but there are many characters utilized in period work which would not be considered bizarre at all. There is a lot of nuance involved in period work that most other types of acts do not have to deal with- Authentic Costuming, language, personae, accurate knowlege of the time period being protrayed. Maintaining a solid character for an eight hour run (At least in Ren faires...Unless you go and hide in your tent/car/hotel room between acts, you are in the public eye. You may not be performing, you might be eating a bit of ham on a roll, but you are being watched!). I know a lot of Ren Performers stay on site camping out with their show so sturdiness and weather worthiness of props can be a big issue. There is a lot of stuff that could be covered. I am very excited about the prospect! Thanks for considering it Steve! Gwyd Gwyd |

This would probably help with the confusion/overlap between Bizarre magic and Storytelling magic.
There is a lot to be said in favor of this.

I beg to disagree Bill,
As the "Once Upon A Time" area is specially for Storytelling Magicians, as opposed to hard-core bizarre or the crypt. While this could incorporate story, the request seems to be for defined Character/Venue/Style. There is a lot of cross-over in all the Café areas, and it can be daunting to maneuver! Walt |

Personally, I have never had much problem finding the sections I need. Occasionally, I need to re read the existing ones, but never really stumped.
Period performances are outside both storytelling and bizarre. I think that it would be fitting to have it's own particular section. Gwyd |

I'm all for it... all things considered.
Since the character is the basis for all my purchases, it would be a great way to have brainstorms as to how to make something fit, and fit well with who is portrayed.

I'm just checking back on this thread, so I'll cast my vote again. I came to the Café, and have also joined a couple of other forums, in order to help develop a historical period act to perform here: FORT PHOENIX. I've learned at lot here in bits and pieces scattered about, but one area dedicated period magic would be great.
Along with passing on information about costumes and props, performance in historical venues, etc., we could develop some lists of typical effects that are known to have been performed at certain times in history. People like Bill Palmer who have performed period-style shows can offer great contributions to this area of magical study. Chris

Someone just posted a "how do I create a persona" question
that is all ready developing into an interesting thread, this is exactly the sort of post that would be perfect (and find-able) in a "Periods, Character, and Style" section to my thoughts, is this suggestion from 12/19 dead or still on the table? Magicallly, Walt |

I would also like to throw in my "kudos" for this particular thread.
There's a lot of performers out there doing period venues (some say I take my choice of time period further than others) and would love to chime in on it if there was its own forum. Much love, Daniel GreenWolf |
