Roccco has a unique style in that he really was the first one I knew or saw that manipulated roses. wehat a wonderful element to manipulate cause the rose can convey so many images and impressions in the mind of the audience. In his act he would do segements without saying a word that showed fear and love and broken hearts. All this conveyeed with the roses, music and the magic presentation. a very creative act and one certainly that takes manipulative magic in a new direction.

Looking back at the Cardini film, one literally is never aware of any steals... his work is flawless and his character is wonderful. I love the bit with the old club man sitting there and Cardini swapping pipes to walk off.
One thing of note. Cardini, and many performers of that era ALWAYS worked in front of special scenery, seldom working just in front of whatever curtain the theater "happened" to have. My dad used to carry a couple of trunks full of background drapes and settings for his act in vaudeville.

Cardini is a perfect example. here is someone who knew from an early age that manipulative magic could be so much more then just a showing of skill alone. he realized the importance of character, theme and comedy. He used this to give his audiences something more to enjoy and grab ahold of. In stead of the audience just liking his skill, they started to love him and the character he portrayed. I think he really understood that manipulative magic could be so much more then just this idea of "watch how cool this is".

That's the point exactly the audience saw a flawless performance so they could get the story which by the way was a clear and direct story, usually only good performance writers and seasond actors can do that [not most magicians.]
he wasn't showing off, he was telling a clear story. only the magicians in his audience understood the mind altering skill it took and they were the only ones who cared.....thats the perfection of our art. many now do the opposite, they tell some convaluted story so the trick makes sense instead of taking a palet of moves to make a routine. cardini was so skilled he could do better moves then any show off move monkey, yet he also had better skills then most theater workers of other fields of entertainment. that's good, that's what's better then perfect technique, that's what makes it better then a puzzle that you'd need a lot of spare time to be interested in unless your were a puzzle maker. |

What would we do to entertain people if we weren't allowed to do a magic trick. how many minutes could we fill on a stage?
a question to my fellow magi. |

Answer: A lot if you really understand that magic can and should be way more then showing off of skill alone.

Look guys there are lots of "greats." The next time you watch a McBride video, listen to greats Jeff names off by move. Then ask yourself, how many of the moves are named after your great. Sure, Jeff, Lance and other contemporaries do terrific shows. Just remember, their shows are filled with inspiration and methods offered by the best.

But I think the idea could be to learn from the past and conteorary "masters" or "greats" and then derive from that something that you can directly apply to your own magic to make it unique, creative and to raise the bar for the manipulative arts. All these greats we can learn from and can gain knowledge from. Take this information and then directly apply it to how you perform your manipulative magic. I think by doing so, you open yourself up to a much greater level of creativity.

If you get a chance to see Topas perform his act or parts from his show... GO AND SEE IT. You will really be amazed at what this man has accomplished and created. Truely original and creative magic.
