This is a great backdrop. Bought it a month ago and it does everything the description says - sets up and breaks down in about a minute, fits in very small spaces, hugging the walls and corners, lightweight. Jeff is very helpful and takes the time to answer any questions you have. The other day, I had a very small living room with 15 kids and 10 adults crammed in there and it was like the backdrop transformed the room into a mini theater giving it the atmosphere. There was still plenty of room for kids to come up to the "stage" and participate. Afterward the mom complimented me on how well I utilized such a small space. It really helps to draw attention in. I would recommend this very highly for anyone interested in using a backdrop. -Mike

Jeff showed these at Kidabra 2006 during the Mr. Greggy lecture, and I was very impressed.

This looks very practical, as it takes up so little space. How does the backdrop work? Is it like the Spiderflex system? Presumably not. And how stable is it once it's put up? I plan to add a new backdrop next year, but I'd prefer to make my own backdrop, and buy just the support system. I currently use a portable photographic backdrop set-up, which is very easy to use, but rather unstable, so unsuitable for outdoor events, or where kids might run around the backdrop. This backdrop simply has a tripod stand with a trough at the top into which you fit a backdrop attached to a pole at the top.

Based purely on the photos on the page I wasn't that impressed with the backdrop.
The seam down the middle stands out and looks a little unprofessional. As does the puckering along the edges. A backdrop should either hand like curtains (ala spiderflex) or tight like signage (ala http://www.tiptoptom.com.au/img/tomsmagicshow2913.jpg) Whilst it is a matter of personal taste, I find the glittering dressings a little garish (says the man in the spotty vest). It reminds he of the sort of backdrop that might be used in a school or puppet show put on by children. |

I have one of Jeff's backdrops and absolutely love it. Easy up, easy down and it covers a relatively huge area. I've used it indoors and outdoors. I have a simple one-trip policy for my parties - Everything I use must be easily carried into and out of the house in one trip...and this backdrop fits that bill. Jeff makes several different designs to fit various needs and he will discuss custom designs with you. It's less expensive than the spider systems and it is Capital "S" Sturdy. It is a matter of taste, as Nick points out...but Jeff will work on creating a backdrop that works for you.

I often wonder where the line between 'personal taste' and crappy is. I see performers who have their own personal style of performing which is not very good.
For example, I once met a busker who thought he was a modern tramp ala charlie chaplin. I explained that his torn jeans and dirty t-shirt just made him a bum. He shrugged it off as "personal taste". How much can we really trust our own taste or should we look for broader trends and rules of fashion/decoration/art to help guide us? |

Not meaning any offense, Nick, but I personally don't like the vest shown in your avatar. I would never wear one like that. Does that make my taste right and your's wrong? Or does it simply mean that you and I have different performance characters and individual concepts of what our characters can and cannot do and wear? There were many in the early years who felt that Doug Henning's "Hip Image" was insulting to the magic community...and yet he became a driving force in returning magic to a higher level of recognition.
Your taste is yours. Mine is mine. If Jeff's backdrops appear cheesy or unprofessional to you, so be it. I REALLY like mine and have received countless compliments through its use. My clients like it. I like it. Our taste rules here. I respect your opinion and your right to feel as you do. I will ask you not to sling stones at a peer's pet project because your taste differs from his. Fair request?

Justr as I would rarely wear hundreds of bullets! Taste is a personal thing.
The question of taste can be applied to colour, form, style, aesthetic design However, often we also use taste to determine functionality, popular acceptance and the ability of the product to meet it's brief etc. For example, I don't like the material used on the side. I find it garrish and cheap looking. The fact that I don't like it is unimportant. What is more important is that I can not imagine top children's entertainers using this backdrop. I can not imagine it being used in Disney Land or in a top rating children's TV show. The spiderflex is a top notch backdrop I can easily imagine being seen in such venues. Aside from the issue of my personal taste or broad The puckered seams and the uneven hang of the curtain are less about taste and more about basic levels of professionalism. Another good example is my website. I get a lot of stick about it because it's too simple and plain for a lot of magicians. I would rather have a fancy flash site with bells and whistles. But I get most of my cold calls from it so I ignore my taste and other magician's taste and go with what is the most professional. HOWEVER, my website has also been home to technical glitches and spelling mistakes in the past. This is not acceptable and is the puckered seams and uneven hang. (if anyone spots a spelling mistake on my site PLEASE let me know! It's the only way I'll learn!) |

Thanks for all the wonderful things being said about our backdrops.
These truly are one of those things that you will have to see in person. The true quality doesn’t show up in pictures. These backdrops are customized to your request so most of the fabric options are not shown on http://www.magicbackdrops.com at this time. I will try to get more pictures and information up at the beginning of 2007. The posted picture demonstrates how the sides can angle to fit into the corner of a room (like the majority of my birthday party situations). This backdrop can just as well be used as a flat stand alone background or in my outdoor shows I angle the sides back to go flesh against a building (to best prevent wind from getting behind it). The greatest amount of detail is placed into every backdrop. It use to take over 10hour each, we now have this down to a system of about 5hour to make. I plan on showcasing at upcoming conventions, because seeing is believing . (Kidabra, Twist & Shout and hopefully IBM). If you have any questions please e-mail me anytime magicinmotion@yahoo.com . After using my own self-made back drop, I can easily say that buying one of Jeff Jones ( magicbackdrops.com ) is the way to go. Elegant, sturdy, light weight, comes is a small package and opens up big, unlike others, it's height and width can vary --- oh, and it sets up fast --- I can get mine from bag to up in 30 seconds, and break it down in a bit over a minute.
I like to do Birthday parties from corners, and this adapts well to corners, yet still is fantastic on stage. Big issue - he sells them too cheap compared to the competition! The only draw back is the carring bag is nice but not "Airline rugged" but that is changing soon. DON'T look at the web site. It is "crappy", but the product is wonderful. On top of it all he can custom make one for you. I have one, and have another one ordered custom. Ok, I know Jeff, but I truly think this is the best thing available. |

Jeff's backdrops use a tripod with a "T" top. The top has extensions that fold in for easy sizing and transportation. The material is first rate. It can be up to 8 feet high and up to 9 1/2 feet wide.
Generally it has a black velour background (pretty heavy duty) with various colors/styles of sash. I own one, and am getting two (maybe three) more, I like them that much. I charge a lot for my birthday parties, but if they have not experienced one of my shows, once the backdrop goes up (and goes up fast), they know they are getting a great show. Compared to my plain black backdrop,. . . . well there really is no comparison. It is very classy. Personally, I believe I am getting more referrals because of the backdrop, which is important since Jeff and I live in the same area - as well as Skip, and he has one too. I think that soon here in Raleigh, if you don't have a nice backdrop you will be viewed as second rate. I have already received calls where the client uses the backdrop as a level of expertise - outright asking if I had one. |
