It comes down to the presentation of the effect. That it is 100% believable for the spectator and 100% safe for the performer. I am working on a routine with six guns of which 3 get loaded with blanks. I randomly select an audience member who will load the gun and point it to my head...
The only real looking Revolvers with a decent muzzleflash are produced by Alfa Proj in Czechoslovakia and are meant to fire gas or blank rounds. Blank guns you can buy in the States have a totally sealed barrel. That means you have to go with a modification or a real one. That get's into a lot of legal issues now.

I also agree with Meng. Nobody will believe that a 22 year old would put his life on stake. I am 33+ and have a certain personality that works for the routine plus I have an introduction, a story of life and death, which leads into the RR.
It has to make sense and as said earlier presentation is key to this like any magical illusion. My routine comes across believable and is safe. I invested $2,300.00 in it. Larry Beckers routine is in my opinion not 100% believable and is not the safest. Watch his DVD and you know why.

I'm 22 years old. I have performed RR for 2 years now.
In theory I realise and know what you are saying about the audience believeing the stunt. This is the most difficult part of its choreography. However from performing experience I found it goes down extremely well and the audience do invest in it. When I fist started performing it, they didn't but now its very effective piece of theatre for me. Ken

Doug Higley's Traps A Monte in my opinion is more beleivable then any routine with a gun simply because you validate the traps before the performance,... which is something that you really can't do with a gun unless you are using a method which I disclosed only to Scott X.

Didn't you write above that you were closing your show with RR for three years in an above post?

I first saw Larry Becker perform his Russian Roulette on several of his magic videos and I must admit it intrigued me to begin to aquire all the neccessary guns and such to attempt it. I made several phone calls to the local police station to find out what the ramifications are about shooting live blank ammunition indoors (In Canada) at a public event or building. I was told in very "to the point" communication by several police officers that it was not legal to fire off this kind of ammo unless it was at an outdoor sporting event. If I did fire off a starter pistol and a cop was in the vacinity, I could be arrested on the spot.
This put me off the trick completley but I was more afraid of the fact that there is a very real life and death possibility in performing this effect. I have Larry's book Stunners where he tips the method for the first time and believe me, once you know how it is done, there is a very real possibiliy for fatal danger as Larry himself tells in his book on one fateful night where things almost went completley wrong. My advice is, if the master and commander of this effect stopped doing it because it is too dangerous, I won't even attempt it. I have two young kids to raise and it would be ashame if I accidently blew a hole in my head for the sake of entertainment. This is just my two bits. Tony

I don't like Russian roulette I prefer Irakian roulette.
It's more incredible Shortly you don't use a gun but a bazooka. It' the same modus-operandi that russian but at last when you fire on the celing, it's blow out and everybody died under the celing stone except you(usually).

On a related note, for an incredibly tense and truly bleak Russian Roulette based movie check out "13 Tzameti".

On the 9.2 (my birthday...) my new booklet "Shalosh - Stage Work" will be out there. Amongst other effects I put there my Nail Gun Roulette routine which I gave Eran Raven permission to use on Phenomenon. It can be done in anywhere, no set up, no gimmicks, their nail guns (if they have ones...). Even with such a routine which is 100% safe I wouldn't recommand doing it regularly. Mistakes are bound to happen, we are still human. To proof it I have 3 mentalist friends who stabbed thier hands in smash and stabe routines.

Russian roulette routines are hard to sell for sure.
You have to convince the audience that there is a real danger which is not easy even if there is some danger. This is even more the case here in the UK where there isn't such a familiarity with guns, and a collective public consciousness knows that the Health and Safety Executive has, over the years, put in place rules regulations and barriers to protect us all from any harm to the point that it's hard to do anything in the public arena that could result in anyone even getting a bit of a fright. ( I'm exaggerating for effect but the principle holds true) Then there's the problem that the finale of a russian roulette routine is....well... that nothing happens. Another difficult sell. I've yet to see a Russian roulette routine deliver. Even the names I've seen perfoming this haven't been able to sell it. Even if they were actually in danger no one in the audience I was aware of (inc me) had any belief that there was any danger at all. Conversly my 'Russian Roulette Staple Gun Routine' does get the heart racing. It's not such a hard sell. People are happy to beliveve that you'll risk the painful but not life threatening impalement that such a device can deliver. They wouldn't want it to happen to themselves and because the situation is believable it is hence real and does generate tension and excitement . I have seen one Russian roulette routine that got my heart beating... it was in the film 'The Deer Hunter'. Mind you I don't suggest using the same ending that was used in the film. The bullet catch has has the same hurdle to overcome regarding it's believeabbility; and it's a tribute to Penn and Teller's performance and routine construction that they make it work so effectively. They create the tension I've never experienced watching a Russian Roulette routine. Neal.

Bruce Lee's son Brandon was killed on a movie set with the wadding from a blank.
Also, don't know where you plan to perform this but RR routines of many shapes and form were featured on a recent television program here in the states, so it may come across as way too unoriginal for the risk involved. Still, if you must, Bob Cassidy probably has the safest/most interesting I have read. Heck just read a mind and float a gun instead. D. |
