Hey guys.. I was just playing around with folding up an 18" silk today, and discovered a cool way to fold a silk up so that you can make it appear and show it is opened immediatly..
I always see dove workers, or most magicians using silks for that matter, make a silk appear, and they have to find the other corner, after it is produced, to pull to show the whole silk to the audience.. With this fold, the silk is opened up with two hands very fast, and the front of the silk is already facing the audience.. I honestly came up with this fold independently, but wouldn't be surprised if it is discribed some other place.. Anyhow, lets get into it: First, get a silk (I find 18" silks work the best, display nicer, and are easier to plam) and lay it on the table so that it is flat and all straighened out like a square.. Now just remember the 4 corners and number them (in your head) 1-4 going CLOCKWISE.. Figure 1 For the first fold, you will take corners 3 and 4, and fold them up to the middle of the silk.. Figure 2 Next you will take hold of the bottom most part (the corner facing you at the bottom) and fold that straight up so that it is now on the top middle part of the silk.. Figure 3 Now grab onto corner 2 and fold right over left so that corners 1 and 2 are overlapping, and 3 and 4 are overlapping.. Figure 4 Once that is done, grab the upper right hand corner and fold it so that the upper right and lower left corners are overlapped.. Figure 5 Now take End A and fold it OVER End B.. Figure 6 Now take End C and fold it OVER End D.. Figure 7 Now you have a long, somewhat thin, folded up silk.. You are now going to just simply roll the silk up STARTING WITH CORNER 3-4, and making your way up to 1-2.. BUT, you are going to leave corners 1 and 2 so that they are not rolled up with the rest.. Figure 8 Now heres the performance: Once you have the silk all folded up, palm it so that your middle, ring, and pinkey fingers curl over the conceled silk, and your thumb and index finger grab onto one of the free corners.. Now simply bring your other hand to the hand with the silk, and get ahold of the other free corner.. Now you open your middle, ring, and pinkey fingers, and pull the silk appart with both index and thumbs.. There you guys have it.. Hope it is of some help.. If anyone doesn't really understand it, please just let me know in this thread, and I'll try to take real pictures and/or make a video of how to do the folding.. Enjoy, -Vinnie |

Vinnie it sounds awesome, I'm getting lost at figure 5. I for one would appreciate a vid or photos. This sounds better than the "coiled" production most of use. Hey, you could be on to something! good job.

Very good, Vinnie. Now could you go through the Rice Encyclopedia and make videos of all the silk folds? I don't usually appreciate videos, but they certainly help for following silk fold instructions!
That fold you are using reminds me of the one I use for the torn and restored napkin, except I don't need both corners, but it has similar elements. Good job!

Haha, too bad I don't have the Encyclopedia of Silk Magic..
Thanks man! Glad you liked it! I only wanted to share this because as I stated above, I always see magicians produce a silk that says something, and they have to find the other end of the silk to display the words/picture to the audience.. This automatically lets the audiene see what it says.. Best, -Vinnie |

Good initiative Vinnie, but you really should consider getting Rice's encyclopedia of Silks. It's as valuable as the dove books you have. There are 4 volumes now. If you get the books, they are $34.95 each but you can also get the entire set on CD now for $39.95

Thanks Dave! I'll keep that in mind!
But when you say CD, I don't quite understand how youd be able to follow anything.. CD meaning he talks and you follow along, or DVD? Thanks, -Vinnie |

They have scanned in each page of the books as images and put them on a CD-ROM for your computer. You can read them on your computer, or print them out if needed. For those used to books, it's a little strange, but if you just need to look things up, it's fairly handy. The spelling and typos in Volume 4 are attrocious, but to anyone used to reading e-mail shorthand, it's possible to figure it out.
I use my own indices (from my site on the Internet - http://magicnook.com/forum/projectTOC.htm ) when looking things up, since it's more convenient and I've already corrected the errors.

Spellbinder's Index should be put in its own category or it should be put at the top of the "Smooth as Silk" index and locked for all to use. Everyone tell the bosses to take a look at it.
