I'm an entertainer on my own and an occasional assistant to my father who is strictly a magician. I have a magician's assistant dress, but it is really only appropriate for on stage assistance.

More recently, I have been a roadie-set up, tear down, working the PA system, and putting up the backdrop. We've been having a slight disagreement about what a roadie should wear.

He wants me to wear dressy office style clothes, but for a roadie job I think jeans or all black, breathable clothes are the best. Of course, one must still look professional but I think a simple t-shirt that says "I'm with the Magician" or something along those lines paired with the jeans is perfectly fine. Wondering your thoughts on this?

As someone who has spent many years in the theatre world(community, educational and professional), I can say without a doubt, the only professionally acceptable attire for a stagehand/tech is blacks, preferably without graphics. If you are doing onstage assistant work for the same show, you can change to something more appropriate, like your dress. You need to be comfortable and able to move while assembling equipment. The style of the clothes can be dressier if you are comfortable in it. Hope this helps!

Even roadies have different clothes. The clothes are always black. When working they will wear safety shoes with steel caps to protect the toes and a belt with a flashlight and some multitool in pouches. (In former days Maglite AA, today some LED flashlight/ Mulitool Leatherman or Victorinox) Walkie-talkie with headset is optional. For high class events do not be astonished to see members of the technical crew in formal clothes, even complete suit. When working onstage, I found it easier to work with a vest, not with a jacket. The shirt of course must be black! Never wear a tie (too dangerous), a bowtie is much better. There even exist fashionable safety shoes (Budapest style) that look perfect with evening clothes (Use them - they are not as comfortable as normal safety shoes, because they are tighter - but a hit on your toes is worse).

It depends on the kind of environment you're working in. I've worked in corporate and rock 'n' roll. Corporate was long sleeved shirt and dress pants, even to unpack trucks and load in roadcases. Rock 'n' roll however, I wear jeans and t-shirts. Most of my work buddies go nude when they're climbing trusses!!

Hope this helps!!
