Most of the major chains have a New Age section which encompasses witchcraft, tarot, alternative philosophy, conspiracy theory, UFOs, etc. There is a great deal of excellent background research material depending on your style. And some interesting reading as well.

There are a lot of books concerning our profession even at webstores like "A...." - very good books from Dover Publications. Please don't forget their illustrations for artists and the sourcebooks of decoration. You will find gemstones like "Devils, Demons and Witchcraft - 244 Illustrations for Artists and Craftspeople"

To piggyback on what some of the others have said,
Dover has an extensive collection of older magic books, as well as book on mythology and religion (such as the Budge books on ancient Egypt and grimoires). As abrell also pointed out, Dover has books of illustrations. You can alos get their clip art books that have symbols and other items from a great variety of cultures and times (China, Japan, ancient Egypt, Medieval, and so on.). As Bedford indicated, regular bookstores have sections for New Age that include grimories and alchemy books (including some of older illustrations for these areas). You may also want to look at face reading. The Curator noted Terry Goodkind's books, but there are many other writers that could interest a person with a bizarre trend. Also, don't forget Lovecraft books or graphic novels (all are a good source of ideas). Gotama

I should have mentioned that DOver's clip art books have in two types - one is just the book and the other is a book cith a CD containing electronic versions of the clip art.

Last year, I bought WEIRD PENNSYLVANIA and a blank writing journal, if I remember correctly.
I have several blank journals that fit my persona, my favorite being one with a leather cover and a natural cowhide tie around the whole thing. Bought it at Border's. I also make several regular trips to liberate magic books from the inventory of Half Price Books. The last haul contained 5 books, but the most successful haul yeilded a hardbound copy of Bobo and IMPROMPTU MAGIC OF THE MAGIC CASTLE. Books is books, says I. Chris |

Do any of you have Manly Hall's Secret Teachings of All the Ages? I've always wanted to get it, but don't want to pop out the cash without recommendations. (And books of this kind tend to get reviewed by people reading them for other reasons than I would read it for.)
Of course, it might not be at your local bookstore. UPDATE: curiously, five minutes after I wrote this, I found the entire text online here: http://www.sacred-texts.com/eso/sta/ I still would like to know if any of you have the book. Jeff Goettingen |

My parents should have named me Manly. Really. It's a great name. Great. Jeff (wishing he were named "Manly") Goettingen |

Stoneunhinged, I do have a book or two by Manly P. Hall (not the one you mentioned, I think). I was just kidding about the name.

I recomend Tim Powers Fault Lines Trilogy. Magic Realism at its most imaginative. High Stakes poker games in Las Vegas played with Tarot Cards at a horrible price, Edison's ghost phone and the ghost of Edison himself, the Fisher King...it has it all. And judging by your garb, you might also enjoy On Stranger Tides, a tale of magic, pirates and the high seas. Cheers,

"As I lay sleeping...." You are right. some classic stuff by Parsons to have the brilliant vision to adapt to Poe. It is an album that was many, many years ahead of its time.
