I bought Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic not long ago, and agree that it is one of the best investment in magic. Now I was wondering for those who have this book, what is your favorite trick from this book.
Although I haven't try all of the tricks yet (there are too many!! )...but so far, my favorite would be the Sucker Torn and Restored Napkin. I just love it.

My absolute favorite is the "bill in lemon". Prep is not long. My own 2 variations are that I let the spectator choose between a lemon, banana or apple and then I force the lemon. My other is that I have them put both the envelope and the lemon in paper bag which I shake with a little patter before the final presentation.
"Hey... How'd you do that?".

I would have to go with the Sucker Torn and Restored Napkin too, but I learned it in the Tarbell course. Perform it whenever I can, sometimes comboed with "Flight of the Paper Balls," and "Paper Balls Over the Head." Real clever names, those two.

Don't know about favorite but I wanted to do as much as I could with just a length of rope/string and found much that works in the book.

The comedy rope escape is something I got to see performed by a magician dressed up as Ronald McDonald when I was a kid and have had the pleasure of performing as an adult to the next generation of kids.
Jim Steinmeyer's biography on Alan Wakeling presents that Alan had his own variation of this comedy escape. More props, same effect. Magic doesn't have to be expensive or complicated, just presented well. |

Mark Teaches a simple transposition of two bills stacked on top of each other and rolled up. It sounds strange when you first read it, but it is very effective and totally impromptu.

The repeating dollar bills is always a favorite. I also use the bill in lemon and card in picture frame, both of these also get really good reactions.

My favorite trick from the Mark Wilson book is the first "Color Changing Aces". I've gotten great reactions with it. Although the efect is the same as Dr. Daley's last trick, the handling is much simpler. BTW, Mark Wilson performed this for Dick Cavett on an old HBO magic special.

The one called the last trick in the book, because it is.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

I like the card through box trick. The effect is that the spectator chooses a card and the card is lost in the deck. The cards are then put back into the box, the box is put into the magician's pocket, and he pulls out the chosen card. All of the other cards are left sealed in the box.

Hey, I just went back to my CCIM to read up on "Color Changing Aces." My copy is inscribed on the frontispiece, since I bought the copy directly from Mark Wilson's website. But today I discovered that Nani had also inscribed the book on the dedication page. Nice.
I don't know about the trick itself, though. Two things: 1) The method is so obvious that anyone who's ever heard of the DL won't be impressed, and 2) if you mess it up, you just added to the number of those cited in 1). Does the average audience go for this trick? ///ark |

Heck yeah! That's why it's in Mark's book.
Just make sure you practice it first so you don't mess it up. Mark. |

I have been doing magic for several years...but I never got this book. do you think its worth it?
I'm already familiar with some effects you guys are mentioning such as doc daleys last trick, paper balls over head, several bill in lemon versions etc... I know it receives great praise but I just never bought it. I started with tarbell instead. also I think there are different versions of this book? ive seen one for $10 and another for $20. one seems smaller then the other. I don't know what the difference is |

Is it worth it? Heck yeah!...again.
This is one fantastic book and you'll be glad to have it in your library. You will refer to it often. It has chapters on most styles of magic. Cards, coins, sponge balls, rope, stage illusion, etc... There is a HUGE difference in the books. You'll want to get the larger ($20) version called the Complete Course... The other book ($10) called the Cyclopedia...is way under half the size (literally) of the bigger book, making it hard to hold. It will not lay flat when trying to read it. It is also missing about half the material of the larger book. I actually have both. Two copies of the large one and one copy of the smaller one. The smaller one is nice to throw in a bag if your traveling and just want a magic book with you, just in case... The large one is, like I mentioned earlier, looked at often. If you are a member of a magic club and they have a theme for the month, chances are better than not that you will be able to find a great effect right out of this book. My suggestion? Get it! Mark. |

I went into a magic shop a couple of weeks ago to buy Mark Wilson' CCIM. Walked out with - a wand, Double Take (Wilson) a chop cup and a couple of decks of cards.
I will have to get it one day, so many people recommend it. Mind you I also have Strong Magic and Dear Mr Fantasy on the wish list. So many good texts to buy. |
