I'm looking for instructions on making a toupee out of acorns...
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

First you wrestle a squirrel to the ground... ah, never mind. If you're going to do it that way, just make the toupee out of the squirrel like so many others!

Thank you all for the great info!
I finally had some extra time to do this using a box knife. Although time-consuming, I was able to get results that I was happy with. I'm sure that using a router would have been a quicker/better solution, but I neither have access to nor the experience necessary to feel comfortable with that method. Also, as a side note, I did find a place on eBay that sells nothing but hollow books (as their name would imply): http://stores.ebay.com/JUST-HOLLOW-BOOKS But I prefer to be a do-it-yourself kind of guy whenever possible. |

I am just cutting to books to make them hollow. And because I am faking several books I needed an efficient way of doing this.
First I tear out all pages in one block - for doing this I mostly have to cut with a sharp knife between the first and last pages and the cover. Then I draw the outline of the cutout on the front page and saw along this line with a bandsaw - the three visible sides of the pages remain, the inner part of the page and the back sides of all pages are cut away. A wood blade works fine. Then I place all cut out pages on a sheet of kitchen foil and use sone white wood glue and paste all pages on the inside so that they become a solid block on the inside. Then the book can be assembled again. Of course you can change the cover and add a selfmade front page to that book according to your needs. |

Now some white wood glue is smeared on the inside of the cutout - after drying I turn the pages around and glue from the other side. And you can see I am preparing several books at the same time:

The corner edge is cut away when the block of pages is solid - it would be too difficult with loose pages. And I add a small piece of wood; otherwise the book would bend strangely at its back. And now everything is prepared for new artwork with the cover and some new pages added to the front of the "book":

I was at my local Michaels a couple of weeks ago, and they had some hollow books. They weren't made from real ones, but they looked like they would work for some prop applications.

Interesting thread. I use to make these types of books when I was younger to hide really dumb stuff! lol
Lots of great tips and advice here. I might just have to give it another go. thanks folks! James |

Well, I must say Abrell, your method looks much better than any I've tried: neater, faster and less tedious. I've x-acto'd (oh, that takes a good deal of patience), and I've used a cutting wheel on a roto-tool (watch out for igniting paper dust). I wonder how difficult it would be to use a jig-saw (hand or power, not bench)?... just musing... you never know, as James says "might just have to give it another go."

Guys, some great ideas here, but applying a "buy or build" grid to this decision, I gotta go with George on this one. Those book boxes (the prefinished ones in the home decor section, not the unfinished ones in the wood crafts section) are the best answer for me. Less than $20, pre-aged, and just really nicely made.
For some reason, Michaels is evidently popular with a group called "crafters." Synonym for "Magicians," I suppose... FWIW, Leland |
