Here's a preliminary appraisal. This is a large, solid, practical-looking collection of close-up/parlour psychic/bizarre-themed mentalism effects with relatively prosaic presentations (by our standards) and very well-considered -- and in some cases innovative -- methods. I'd have to read more and try some of it out to evaulate it, but it's definitely worth a good look.

?

Does that mean that it looks good, or not?
A mime is a terrible thing to waste.

Yes, it looks good -- I think I might well recommend it strongly when I've finished, but I haven't read enough to do that yet.

If you get it and like it, Roger also has a shorter book called The Lost Papyrus of Imhotep, containing his adaptations of others' effects in the same area, which is available from Magick Enterprises in Sheffield.

I most certainly did. roger is a good friend of mine who has influenced me no end over the years. His book is certainly food for thought and even if the bizare presentations aren't for you, they can easily be adapted to suit yourself

Hi!

I finished reading "Sublimations" before the holidays and I'm more than satisfied with it. The book is particularly noteworthy for the methods and the clever handling in many of the effects. Some methods are top notch, and the handling of "A Gift from Elizabeth Francis" is absolutely top class and PRACTICAL.

Some effects left me un-inspired: "Souls of Previous Times" is just Bob Neale's ??? (sorry, forgotten the name :-( I'm away from the library) done with tarot cards rather than standard cards: I think anybody who has read Bob's "Life, Death and Other Card Tricks" would have thought of this variation (I did, and I was performing this story with Tarot cards in 2000!).

The book is also very detailed: Roger goes to the point of giving the exact commercial brand and order number for some items he uses (pens). The following effects are my favorites:

- Psychotronic: an original EFFECT very clean (the method is very old: Christian Chelman uses it for a completely different effect in Hauntiques...);
- 3 Patterns Prediction: a great use of multiple outs and an innovative method;
- Subliminal perception: a "mind-control" effect that really fooled me;
- Zurcon: a very clever gimmick, worth experimenting with;
- Third Eye: a very clever faked envelope that may be useful for a number of routines.

I didn't have any problem in playing the DVD on 2 different machines (one of which a very cheap and unreliable one...) nor on my computer. I have to say that, however, Roger's presentations don't come out as particularly engaging, being just a demonstration of the effects. I would recommend you to check the DVD out first, THEN to dig in the book for the handlings.

Some of the presentations, as already mentioned, are quite "new age", which isn't something I can see myself use, but you may think otherwise ;-)

I hope these comments may help you evaluate the book. I think it's a book well worth studying.

All the best, happy 2007 everybody!
