I'm not sure how to word what I'm looking for and that's probably why I haven't been able to find it yet.
I'll try to give an example of the kind of information I'm looking for. I remember seeing something on TV a while back about man made objects in space such as satellites. How they are able to make something that fits in a small space open up to be something large such as a Solar Sail or a robotic arm. Or even a box that somehow folds open to make a larger box. I'd even say the design of an umbrella would fall into the category of what I'm trying to find. Am I explaining this right? Does anyone know what this "study" or "technology" would be called so I might get better results in my searching? Thanks. Ron Jaxon |

You might try deployable structures. I think that is what you want.

One of the reasons these things work so well in space is that they are weightless.. and have less weight/momentum.
Doing the same jobs in regular gravity would require much stronger and therefore larger motors and other mechanical parts |

Thanks, guys.
I understand what you mean, makeupguy. Fortunately, my need for this won't use any kind of motor. It's the folding or collapsing part that I'm trying to work out. Something that'll open up to form a shape. An Asrah form would fit the kind of thing I'm looking for. I'm not working on an asrah form, but that's a good example of the "technology" I need to make what I'm working on. Another example would be those balls that grow and collapse. Ron Jaxon |

Jaxon,
You might find the carbon fiber shapes and the wire offered at this site to be useful: http://www.timgoldstein.com/secure/eStore/ Mark |
