I was thinking about adding a Zigzag illusion to my act. The question I want to know, is it still an winner with the audience since the masked magicians exposure? Are there any other magicians that still perform it? Do you get any heckling?

The Zig Zag is the best. It can be done surrounded and people have gone up to when no one was in it and still can't figure it out.
Most people do not remember seeing on the Masked Magician show. And even if they did, they like to see it in person. My friend Scott Interrante does it in every show. It gets a great reaction.

I had written that illusion off even before the masked moron did it, as overdone and overexposed. However, just this year, I was at a function and introducing myself to a lady, and my work as a magician came up. Her eyes lit up and she asked me if I "did that trick where the lady is cut in half and the middle is taken out?", followed shortly by "How do you do that?"
Just about every magic trick or illusion out there is being exposed, one way or another, on some internet site somewhere. However, the Harbin Zig Zag will live on as a great classic illusion of magic, limited only by your presentation style. It has always been the illusion of choice of smaller acts because of it's ability to pack small and play big. Depending on your performing venue, there is always the potential for some idiot to heckle you about any trick that you do. Only time and performing experience will help you through those instances. Zig-zag is GREAT!! Can even be performed close-up!
Harbin's talking presentation, also done by Blackstone Jr. and Peter Reveen, was a fabulous way to present this illusion! Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

I always perform the Zig-Zag the Harbin way, and bringing a spectator onto the stage to help with "pushing" the center box blows them away.

I have a Zig-Zag and have removed it from my show. The only reason is that, for a variety of reasons, I had no way of transporting large illusions; so I had to get one that packed flat (when I bought it almost 20 years ago). It does play very well and it can be viewed close-up. The only problem is almost 30 minutes to unpack it and put it together and about 15 to tear down and pack away. If I'm doing one hour or more, I'll consider putting it in, but otherwise, I'm buying another illusion to put in it's place that is much more practical for my uses.

Steven - after 20 years I'd say that you are due for a new illusion anyway!

I really take care of my stuff (it's an Owen's which cost me about $4,300 in 1985); so I'm really resistant to selling my things. It's in really good condition. I'll add illusions, but this was my first one; it has a lot of sentimental value.

Yes, it's a great illusion. People have forgotten the exposure already. Heck, most of your audiences probably never saw it to start with! Besides, it's STILL amazing to see it person, even if you know the secret. I have done it the "Harbin" way, as well as other ways. It's always a hit. I haven't wheeled it out in about 2 years, but I wouldn't hesitate to do so.
And Steven, Christopher is right ... treat yourself to something new! But keep doing that Zig Zag. |

If you ask me, the Zig Zag illusion is even stronger than Modern Art. I sold my ZigZag four years ago but I am planning to put in back in my shows this year. The Mis-Made Lady is another illusion I plan to revive.

When I first got my Zig-Zag, my assistant would practice with me in our kitchen. Her husband would come over after work and sit at the kitchen table. He was blown away from 5 feet away. People that have seen the exposure, when viewing the Owen's Zig-Zag, at least, have told me that this is better than the one on TV. The one on TV was obvious, but this illusion is totally different.
They say the same thing when seeing the linking rings. Just goes to show you what presentation can do.

I have to agree. The Zig Zag is one of the best. We have used it in our show for about 8 years now. And it always gets a great reaction. There's a lot of points people miss in the presentation (do a search here on the Café and you will find many threads about this.) But even done just to music it still goes over well.
Definitely recommended! Matt |

Some things never actually come into style except in the minds of the "wanta bes". Ask an agent! Many agents ONLY book classics. They aren't dumb. I will go for the mini zig zag.
The effect is even bigger and the size is smaller.
