Hey all,
I am referring to stands used on stage to stand or sit the puppet on while performing. Currently I am using a stand that I made modifying a heavy duty music stand with a plastic platform top. Unfortunately, it is heavier than I would like. What different stands are you guys/gals using? Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance! Damien |

The basic stand is a Mic stand. You then get a flnage that fits the threads and attach that to the board surface, cover with your favorite no slip covering and add a fringe. Viola..vent performance stand. Now, that said..the problem I have had in the past is getting the proper flange. the most simple way is to order a stand or even just order the top from one of the Vent suppliers and use it on your mic stand base.

Aside from what Chris had said, another good stand is Selberg's performance case which can be transformed into a vent stand. The good thing about this case is that you don't need to carry an extran stand with you! Perfect for those who like to travel light.
I've probably tried almost all vent performance positions (with stands, using a chair, etc.), but now I'm very comfortable using a stool I created where I sit and I just place my figure on my knee. This is also the favorite position of vent living legend Willie Tyler. But if you really like to use a stand, just do what Chris suggested--use a mic stand and just make a top yourself--very inexpensive! |

Oops, if I may add... another favorite of mine is the classic vent performance position--where I just put my right foot on a chair and place my figure on my right lap. That way, I can add aditional figure movements by moving my right knee/lap.
The rule of thumb, I supposed, is use whatever position YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH. |

Ony- The last time I spoke to Tim he his cases were unavailable He was having issues with a builer or supplier..at the moment I do not recall which. I have a Sleberg figure and was wanting to get a case for him and that's what Tim told me. Perhaps this has been corrected and the cases are available again. I will drop him a note to see
Happy new year to all! |

I have also thought about this a little too much in my time.
For kids I find it important to diversify the 'looks' and enviromental positions of each character. I have three main characters and then the Drawing board at the end. The four positions I use are Standing with the board Sitting with the dog The little boy stands on top of my roll on I also have an Axtell Possum on a Bird Arm Illusion. It might be worth you also thinking about using different positions for different characters. I think it keeps everything alive, fresh, unique and real. For adult work, Well my stand up show deals with quite a few unusual vent concepts but I mostly sit. I find it helps with the focus. It pulls it all in. I also feel much more comfortable when a character is sitting on my knee. Sometimes I have them standing on one of those collapseble tables that magicians use. The same look as the mic stand table but less robust. I don't need to put any weight on it with what I do though so it works just fine. When seated I can relax in a natural position with the figure. I have never been comfortable with holding the puppet with my other hand while standing. I have always felt myself a 'shag on a rock' as we say over here, in that position. I think that ONY hit the nail on the head when he said...be comfortable. Both physically and mentally. Dean |

Dean,
I have the Axtell Possum. I've been looking for a bird,so I could use the arm illusion. I have NEVER thought of using the arm with my possum. How does the audience take with the possum on your arm? Do you have a picture of it? What dog do you have? I'm looking for a stand, so I understand. Jerry

Hi Jerry
The Possum looks very funny on the arm. I think it works great. OK,it's not exactly organic but it works very well technically as the arm enters from the bottom. I toss a leg over the arm and wrap the tail around the fake fingers. I got the initial idea for using the arm with the Possum after I heard Steve suggest that it could be done in a podcast. Then I spoke to Steve a little to see what he thought could be done with teh idea. Basically, you look like a zoo keeper. It works over here as we have marsupials in captivity and it is not unusual to see a keeper wearing a pair of gloves like that when handling a koala or something. I have been thinking about whether or not to use the arm illusion for two different characters in the same show. My current thining is probably NOT. It's like using a change bag for two tricks. Not a good look. If I used it for anything else It would almost certainly be a BIRD. The trouble with the Axtell site is that is the 'choice' they have so many wonderful puppets. If you wanted to get a bird I guess that 'Vern' would be the all round best choice. the vulture is awesome though. Could be scary for kids which was another reason why I tried the possum on the arm. Otherwise I probably would have been using the vulture I have the Ivan and Maria Pavlov dog. It's a real hit. Looks like Scooby Doo. I also love Ax's dog too. The blood hound as opposed to the Bull dog who I like less. D |

I use a keyboard stand plus figure case as stand and also a modified ex hi-hat/cymbal stand (part of drum set) plus a top table.
The second one is very light weight, but sturdy and can pack small. Regards, Budi Ha Ha |

I like the case used as a stand. Saw Jeff Dunham use his cases that way. It's very practical. But I don't have that kind of case so I use the mic stand type. Here's the part number for the flange I use:
Atlas Sound AD-11BE It's a 5/8" - 27 female flange connector. |

Well, just to let you know I can help you if you want a vent figure case that can be transformed into a stand--like Selberg's performance case: http://www.selbergstudios.com/cases.html One of our Magic Café friends here recently ordered from me and he received it a few days ago. It's custom-made. Have a great day! Ony Carcamo, PHILIPPINES |
