Effect:
A deck of cards is shuffled by a spectator. Really shuffled. You then cut the cards into 10 packs as follows: The first pack has 1 card, the second pack has 2 cards, the third pack has 3 cards and so on. Now, show that the cuts are so exact that the top card of each packet is a Spade, and the Spades are in sequential order! The top card of the first packet is the Ace, the top card of the second packet is the Two, the top card of the third packet is the Three, and so on, in sequential order from Ace to Ten, indicating the number of cards in each packet! Great magic, but there's more! Produce the Jack, Queen and King of Spades from the pack. Then, shuffle the deck once more and make three exacting cuts, dividing the deck into three packets. Turn over the first packet to reveal all the diamonds in sequential order, from Ace to King! Turn over the second packet to reveal all the clubs in sequential order, from Ace to King The third packet reveals all the hearts in sequential order, from Ace to King. The entire deck is now in order! Just a quick review.... Great trick. It seemed a bit pricey at $40, but once you play around with it, you will realize that it is well worth it not only for the gimmicked deck, but for the thought behind the workings. The only downside to the entire trick is the reset time. This is not something that is practical for walk around. However, if you are doing a set at a party etc, whip out this little gem during your regular card routine and blow them away. 8/10. |

How obvious is the gimmick? When I read the description in MagicSmith's catalogue my first thought was a deck switch, but there are so few effects utilising these that actually do them well. Most of them are fiddly and very suspicious. Is this?

I sent him a PM and asked a few questions.
1. There's no deck switch involve does it? NO 2. Is there any sleights involve, if so how hard is it? Yes, not too hard 3. Do you think I'll ever get busted performing this trick? Probably not, but I don't know your abilities. 4. Does the deck come in blue or red backed Bicycle deck? Blue

This is a beautifully made deck. I had seen Evans perform it in the Close up room at The Castle and the next day it came into the magic shop. The guys asked if I'd heard of it and I pulled it out of the box and starting explaining, "Well, he starts cutting in ten piles..." when I looked down I was startled to find that I had cut it exactly right... the deck practically did the work. It's something that works as a great closer.

Ok, another question (this happens a lot with expensive tricks
When you say the spectator can shuffle, does that mean you can say "Here, take the deck and shuffle it" or is it more like "Here, take the cards, now do this, now do this, now do this..."?

It's somewhere between these two options. The shuffle is more directed than the first you describe, but not as much so as the second. "Shuffle these into each other" is more like it. |

Got it, thanks.
Is there a clip of this effect anywhere? I'd love to purchase it but at the cost (close to $100 for me in Australia) I want to actually see it being done first.

I am glad to see this post!
I suddenly realise that this web site is GREAT! ^_^ I have heard of this trick before, nice to know it has finally been published. Yes, I am also concerning the shuffle part, because it is the only way the audience will be fooled and amazed. Michael

I just saw Henry do this on the Magic Cruise this week. Great trick. Some sleights. Intermediate level at least.
You WILL NOT be disappointed. Great effect! Steve H

Since the deck is gimmicked, is there much chance of the trick being found out by a curious spectator? How "tricked up" is the deck?

That's a matter of modest audience management, and, frankly, I don't see why an audience member needs to shuffle more than that unless they want to be troublesome. I was in the front row at Henry's lecture at Marc DeSouza's and was asked to be the shuffler. I am embarrassed to announce publicly that I had no clue how he did the trick, and I was blown away. Hum... I have it... but I lost the instruction... Could someone possibly please tell me (PM) the set-up???
Yes, the set-up is pretty trouble. @_@"~ If you have this deck, please buy his L&L video vol.3, and see the Youth Machine!!! Then you can see his beautiful handling of returning the deck to normal. In my opinion, $40 is still the reasonable price. Michael Lam

I saw him perform this at the Columbus Magi Fest and loved it. His presentation was excellent and the trick was baffling to both the magicians and lay people I was with.

Blue, as already stated above.....This is worth the setup, and is a great effect after you get the moves down, but the instructions are not the best......

This is a total mindblower... I saw him perform it at the blackpool magic convention this year and spent the entire first day walking around in a daze trying to figure out how he did it! I went back the next day and bought it... the thinking is SO clever... the required 'handling' is not too knucklebusting... in fact the only area I have a problem with is 'the bit after the audience shuffle the deck'... (if you have it, you'll know what I mean'...
but it's worth any amount of practise, because it SLAYS audiences! |

If you do not need to reset the deck (doing this as part of a single show/routine) after the 10 cuts effect, can the same deck be used for selected additional card effects? I say selected as I assume that there would be some concerns about too much exposure for the deck after the 10 cuts effect.
Thanks, Mike |
