How practical and effective are the tricks in Tomas Medina's DVD "Geek Magic"? Are there any more similar stuff be they books or DVDs?

Don't know about others that would have the same effects, but the Geek Magic DVD is very good. Simple. Cheap. Practical. Lot's of good material to work with and well explained.
Highly reccommended. I use them all the time for walkaround stuff. Would not consider them bizarre as is...But that is another completely different subject. Gwyd |

Thank you for your reply. Can someone recommend me other stuff similar to Geek Magic. I love to blend comedy with shock magic.

There are several books by Andrew Mayne (One actually called shock magic) that are nice and solid. I'd look into those.
Stay away from body morphing though. Definately Not his best work. Individual tricks...I's say Saw by Sean Fields (I think that is who it is), Peter Loughrans Iron Garotte. Thee is a newer one out...Peel I think it is called? You tear off a strip of skin from the inside of the arm...Haven't seen it up close yet, but the demo looked good. Anyone else have any ideas? Yeah I've heard and seen Andrew's "SHOCK FX" video clip. But as seen from the demo clip, the production of a bowling ball from the paper bag doesn't look convincing. As seen from the clip, the "prepared" opened paper bag was already sitting on the ground. It would be better if the paper bag is folded and taken out from his pocket.

Swami/Mantra has a few things on Geeking, but in my opinion Medinas DVD is the best single source for eating things. be warned, I don't personally like that book no matter how highly recommended it is here at the Café.
also, Medina doesn't actually geek, he does tricks. Swami give methods for actually geeking. Mayne has a routine called "lunch with cthulu", which is ok. did you already post this in 'step right up'? they're the people to ask if you really want to bite the head off of a chicken. |

The DVD has some really great and practical ideas.
I bought the DVD and so far my favs are his handeling of "eating razor blades" and how he teaches you to "eat" glass. they are pretty overall, the onle one I thought was a little useless was the one with a cocaroch. -Steve |

If you want to learn the real stuff, you need a teacher, and to learn it in person. But it's not magic.
Todd's one of the few folks who teach, who are credible. You can take classes from him at Sideshow School at Coney Island. I'll also teach some classes this summer, and will post the dates in a couple of weeks.

While not technically a magic book and definitely not an instructional book on the subject, but Joe Nickell's Secrets of the Sideshows contains cursory information on gaffed acts, fire-eaters, sword swallowers, ingeters, pincusions, blockheads, torture acts, electric marvels, snake charmers, knife throwers, magicians, psychics, torture boxes, living heads, headless people, floating lady, gorilla girl, girl in the goldfish bowl and pretty much every other act, geek and otherwise, associated with sideshows.

As Brother Harley said, get training from a "qualified" teacher for the real stuff. There have too many incidents to do otherwise.

I highly recommend you immerse yourself in the writings of Ricky Jay to deeply experience the atmosphere and style of the wonderful freak-and-geek entertainers of years past. You'll probably even pick up an idea or two to add to your own performance.
If you haven't already read it, run, don't walk, to obtain Jay's incredible book Learned Pigs & Fireproof Women. |

One thing to remember is that the term "Geek magic" is a highjacked term, just like "Street Magic." Technically, the geek was specifically the fellow who bit the head off chickens and swallowed rats, etc.
Read this thread, please, before you continue http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=23 This kind of magic has NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH BIZARRE MAGIC.

Geek or "shock magic" is the question.

Hey guys I just wanted to ask before I posted anything. If anyone would mind if I put up a link to a new geek effect my company is marketing. I think everyone will like it a lot. But I was not sure of the do's and don't's of the Café so I figured I'd ask first.
thanks guys chris |

It as 3 or 4 very strong effects. The one with the Tic-Tacs, the ballon eating, the shaving blades and another one that I can remember right now, but then again, I bought and watch that DVD about 2 years ago. I've heard that Shock Effects by Andrew Mayne was also really good, maybe better than Geek Magic.
