My fiancé is driven nuts by the constant disarray that my collection of odds and ends, props, books, etc, for mentalism is kept in. Does anyone have any tips or tricks, or pieces of organizational wisdom pertaining specifically to mentalism, and the upkeep of supplies we use (pens, pencils, a zillion different types of envelopes, index cards, cutlery, etc…
Help me out guys, lets get some tips flowing!

- Most important advice: keep your notes digital (and maybe add scans of relevant pages from your book collections). I've even made MP3s out of DVD soundtracks so I can listen to them while I'm out running.
- Make sure your entire acts fits in a single case and keep it there (including backups.) Included in the case is a portfolio for making notes and keeping the drawing dupes you get back (it really pays to keep those.) - Keep everything else in a filing cabinet. I sort my envelopes, my card gimmicks, and other flat gaffs in binders for photographs, indexed in plastic sleeves. - If you work with cards: keep the plastic sleeves they come in intact and put labels on them (e.g. 'Invisible Deck', 'PSI Deck'). Then you can slip them out of the sleeves for performance and have them appear ordinary. Just to be sure, pencil something like 'ID' under the top cover so you know afterwards which goes in which sleeves. And be glad that you're not doing stage illusions.

Yes, got rid of the wife 15 years ago, and my life became a lot less hectic.

My wife purchased this bin system. It has worked well for me. It has a few drawers so I can put pens in one. Clipboards in another, etc etc etc. Keeps everything organized and in a closet.

She has stopped even going into my room...
It's such a mess! I have looked at the bin style systems think that would be a wise investment...

Personally I do the following and find that it is extremely helpful.
I keep each show in a Vaultz (see below for link). This way, whenever I have a show, I know that everything I need is in the box ready to do. It's secure, easy to carry and makes life so much simpler. The only work you have to do is replenishing supplies (ie. paper, business cards, sharpies (if they run out) and so on). For my non-show, or not yet in a show, stuff, I bought a nice piece of furniture from IKEA a while ago and it is perhaps the best purchase I've done... furniture/organization wise. It has 3 compartments: two are joined, are on the bottom and just come out like a drawer while the third is the size of the two put together and is hidden by doors that open and inside, its bottom is on rails so taht it can be pulled out. That is where I keep everything... except for my books. Those go on my handy bookshelf which was build in the cement wall itself when the house was build some 40 odd years ago. Strange but awsome. SO check these guys out. They might be a bit pricy for the larger containers but I find that they're worth it because they're super sturdy, they're lockable so no-one can get at the stuff and they're stylish (which is oh so important ) http://www.ideastreamproducts.com/vaultz/Vproduct.html
What you have seen this evening was real, though it may have nothing to do with reality.

L.A. That's why I'm in Boston.
I keep my shows prepacked in briefcases or laptop cases. My standard PE bag and its dulicate are in my office ready to go, in the front of my closet is the mentalist act and its duplicate, in the back of the closet is the kid's show suitcase (all covered in dust). |

Here is a recommendation, newly formed, based on some gifts I saw people receive this holiday season. I think that a scrapbooking bag would work PERFECTLY. It is made to carry everything from scissors to paper to oddly shaped punches and so forth. I looked at a relatively nice one (based on what I was told) closely and not only would almost everything fit in it, there would still be room for books and so forth. The numerous sleeves have an additional benefit as well, in that you can keep your tricks organized in order (clip line deluxe in sleeve 1, bank night in 2, chair prediction in 3, etc.).
I must lament that I do not remember what manufacturer or type of bag it was (a search online for scrapbooking bags at both amazon and costco.com led to some that looked similiar and some that looked very differently). Without knowing for sure what everybody is carrying, I think this is a really good alternative to look into. -Carlos

Jeff, tell the fiancé to shut up and tidy your stuff away like she is supposed to. Women these days have no respect for us men folk.

Jeff,
Many are going to howl over this, but here's my two cents . . . Go through your things; ALL of them, and if you have not actively used something in a year or more; THROW IT OUT!!! This sounds drastic at first, and it does appear that way, but my reasoning is this: You should be working. If you are working, you only NEED what you are actively USING. Surround yourself with working routines and polished USED material. If you are a hobbyist/collector, then there is no sense complaining about your situation; I think that's how it's supposed to be!:) We get into this mode of thought, "Someday I'll need one of those 50+ decks, flash paper, spools of IT, those d-lights, etc." This is rubbish. Look at all the items you have not used in the last 5 years. I'm betting you kept all that for the same reasons, that SOMEDAY you will have a need for them. I say, when the need comes, go to the storage bin and find it or simply purchase it again. Many things we hold onto are NOT important, and though we fantasize about performing them one day; the chances are good that you will keep what works and throw the rest out anyhow. Of course, keep ALL your books. Put the video's or DVD's far away from you. You won't be needing them. Go through your "props" and keep only what you need to WORK. This is easier said than done, and you will find one million reasons to disagree and KEEP useless objects that only slow you down. Let me know how it goes. Peace, Jerome.
