Have one room that is your own to do with what you wish. Keep it as tidy as you can (for you own sanity when you go looking for things), but when not in use, just close the door.

I like what Malchat said about keeping your current show in a case ready to go, I have a separate case for each type of show (3 types). Makes getting ready for a gig no brainer. In addition to this I have a single storage box (under the bed type size) filled with props I am 'in the process' with. They will either blossom into a workable item or be sold at a later date if they don't fit the act for whatever reason. I give myself around 6 months with a prop to routine it to my satisfaction and then will re-evaluate whether to keep it.
Bear in mind with what I am about to say that my main career is as a financial planner with two parallel careers in entertainment as a jazz artist and mentalist/magician. Hence, I tend to think financially with a lot of these matters. As others have mentioned above, I also recomend getting rid (more to the point SELLING) of surplus props unless you wish to collect them. As a matter of fact I am about to list a HUGE PILE of stuff on here for sale in the appropriate thread. The day comes when you have to decide if you are primarily a collector or a working performer. As a working performer your main desire is generally to present a great, artistic, entertaining act with the goal to make money. Hanging on to often expensive props that are not being used is detrimental to the making money goal. One thing I never ever sell is books or DVD's as I consider these are long term resources for study. Of course if you consider yourself a collector or equally collector and performer, by all means keep all the stuff you buy. My view is if I sell a prop and invest the proceeds, there will be a long term return which will allow me to buy the prop back again in future should I suddenly wake up one day and want it in my act. In the meantime, by selling the prop I am not leaving significant lump sums of money laying around the house not being used or doing anything for me. Having said this I realise that the primary motivation for getting into the art is usually not money and there is usually a reluctance to sell a prop as it feels as if you are losing something. This is where a little bit of self examination is a good idea. Many people with a career in the arts are far more motivated by artistic pursuits than earnings. However if the earnings suffer, inevitably, so do the artistic pursuits. As a qualified financial planner with hundreds of clients in Australia including many self employed entertainers, I have a lot more to say on the subject of the business of magic/mentalism and how to make it more productive and which traps to watch out for. This is not the place to go into it and the information (which is extremely practical and down to earth) will be in my forthcoming book due out around mid year. Cheers, Al
