There I was, talking to a good friend after church. It turned out he had been to the Magic Castle a few times and had a real interest in close up magic. He was looking for a quickie to show his son, so I suggested Greg Wilson's, Something from Nothing.
I reach in my pocket for one of my Kennedy halves or a silver dollar - no coins. Oh, now I remember, because I play in the worship band I left the noisy stuff out of my pockets to alleviate any chance of 'ruining the moment' with clinking or anything. No problem. I turn to Rick, hey, give me a quarter will ya, I'll show you one your kid will love. He hasn't any coins either. I turn to Mike who is in another conversation nearby. No coins. The guy he is talking to? No coins. Now I ask you, what are the chances of four or five men standing around with no change in their pockets? I mean, I would have settled for a Penny by the time I gave up and pulled the deck of cards out of my jacket. Never again gang, I will be prepared. Coins - check. Cards - check. Rubber bands - check, etc. |

That's pretty risky to take out a deck of cards after church.

Remember to use ungimmicked coins if you can. Ever spent a Scotch & Soda? A flipper?

Yes!! But the guy at 7/11 stopped me because he looked at the coin and thought I was trying to cheat him.

Good point Markjens! Actually people, especially men, don’t bother to carry loose change much anymore. I have been in clubs where all loose change gets left on the tables (as part of the tips) rather than be put into the pocket. Change, pocket-handkerchiefs, pocket-knives, and big rings of keys are becoming obsolete (right up there with canes and gloves!). Magicians need to be adapt with what the folks in their area are actually carrying. In my area, I have a difficult time finding a guy that is carrying loose change.

This is very helpful. I will never leave home without a pocketful of change. Thanks

This happens a lot, but when I'm in a restaurant or The Castle, I ask someone to change a dollar at the bar so we can use the change.

This seems like a great basic for an act. Load up with some quarters or halves. Ask someone for a coin, and when they don't have any comment on the trend of people not carring change. Then pull coins from their pockets.

I am going to learn a few basic tricks with credit cards etc. People always have some sort of card, could be a drivers license, credit card, ATM card, security card, petrol card, loyalty card etc.
If you want to borrow a coin and noone has any, maybe you could borrow a credit card and 'make some change' from it using whatever method to 'extract' the coins from it.

Try starting an Invisible deck routine, reaching into your pocket, and realizing it's a regular deck.

I once reached for my folding half to find it was gone. The only thing I can think of is I spent it somewhere. Hope it falls into the right hands so that person can get some use out of it.

I know lots of people who have spent gimmicked coins I've yet to meet someone who actually received one in their change. That would be a cool story.

George--
I heard someone on another forum claim he got a half-dollar S&S in change. Said he only noticed it because it sounded hollow against his other change. As it's been many years since I got even a regular half-dollar in change (they are pretty much out of circulation now...), I tend to doubt his story, unless it happened LONG time ago. |

I made it a point to get a folding Sacajawea dollar. You hardly ever see those, and there's virtually no chance I would ever spend it or mistake it for another coin.
Of course I always want to have a few really COMMON coins that are gimmicked also. But I carry a special coin purse - the plastic kind that opens when you squeeze the ends. It has ONLY gimmicked coins in it. .............Jim |

I have given up on gimmicked coins because I always spend them eventually. I tried keeping them in a separate purse, but I would ditch it into a pocket and forget it. I know a magician whose non-magician friend got a 'coin unique' (like scotch and soda but English coin) in his change. He thought it looked fake, dropped it to see how it sounded, and the Penny popped out! Next time he saw my magician friend he said, "Now I know how you do that coin trick!" So we have to be extra careful not to lose these coins because we are in fact revealing secrets!!

I always keep 2 quarters in my wallet for
parking meters, as one never knows when they may be needed. Plus, they will not fall out. Brings back Boy Scout warm fuzzies of "Being Prepared." Success is 10% perspiration and 90% preparation. Carpe Diem.... AmazingBoz aka Phil |

I have often gone for my deck of cards and realised they are missing, looked in the glove box in my car, and they are not there, then I recall using them and not putting them back. I have since bought some more decks, so I have a few around the place.
