If your just starting in mentalism, I would suggest you to go with the EASY TO MASTER MENTAL MIRACLES serie from RICHARD OSTERLIND. Even if the effects are easy to learn and to perform... don't get fooled ... They are great and plays big!!!
I would start with that first. If you like what you see, then go and buy the FIRST 4 VOLUMES of MIND MYSTERIES from OSTERLIND. They are incredible... the first 4 volumes that is. In my opinion, and I think some of you guys agreed with me on that in another post, volumes 5-6-7 of the Mind Mysteries serie are weaker than the first 4 volumes. I'm not saying they're not good, because they are, but I don't think you learn new stuff as much as on the first 4 volumes. Then of course is the BANACHEK PSI SERIE. But be carefull because volume 2 is only on "Muscle Reading" wich is very hard to master for a beginner in mentalism. volume 4 is on Metal Bending. So if your not into that ... well you know! But volume 1 and volume 3 are very good, but a little weaker compare to Osterlind's DVDs. But they're still very very good! Here's a little list of series or DVDs I recommand if your looking for great mentalism effects in no particular order: 1) Max Maven's Videomind serie, 3 DVDs in total. It's great! 2) The Creative Magic of Pavel, volume 3. Great effects on that one! 3) Mind Stunts 1 from Patrik Kuffs. Nice ideas on that one! 4) Ted Lesley's volume 1:Cabaret Mindreading. 5) Marc Spellman 6) 22 Blows to the Head, Jay Sankey. I'm gonna surprise a couple of you guys with that choice, but it was Jay Sankey's "22 Blows to the Head" that started me in mentalism about 3 years ago. Of course it's not even in the same ligue as Osterlind's, Maven's or Banachek's DVDs, but I think that DVD as many great ideas to start from. |

I WILL have to admit that I have a great admiration for L&L's Easy to Master Series. My first intro to magic (besides the Adams line) was Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles. So I suspect Osterlind's line would help me in mentalism as Ammar's helped me in cards.
I have seen 22 Blows by Sankey. I just seem to remember that I wasn't too impressed. Maybe it was because I was stuck in a 'magic' mentality or because it seemed like, at the time, he was putting anything that smelled of magic onto a video. What does everyone think of Luke Jermay's Skulldugery? How would it compare to some of the other videos offered in this discussion? And I'm not opposed to reading books.... it just makes me grimmace to think about it! |

What about Educating Archer by John Archer? Good mentalism and a howling good entertainment!

I think Easy To Master Osterlind series would be my first pick. The reason is that these are old effects, done as originally published by Corinda or Anneman among others. This will give you a good idea of what can be found by buying a $20 book, Corinda's 13 Steps. Reading may seem to be tedious, but 13 Steps IMO, should be used as lessons, not just learning tricks. Study 13 steps, cover to cover, with a notebook in hand. If you really want to get into mentalism, you might have to think of it as a college level textbook to learn fundementals and principles. This way, you might even be able to come up with effects on your own to suit your own style. Also buy the entire Jinx magazine on CD for $20, it is searchable which is a great feature as it should be used as a reference instead of a study book, plus you will save a bunch of money from buying all of the DVD series that only have a fraction of the material for 3-4 times the price. Just my $.02 Ron |

As for recommending DVDs, I would suggest watching either Sankey's 22 Blows To The Head or Patrick Kuffs' first Mind Stunts DVD.

For someone moving over to mentalism, first would be the Banacheck series. Going through these, not only will you gain material, but you will begin to think like a mentalist. Next would be the Richard Osterlind DVDs, here you will gain a wealth of material and information, and learn to structure an act by example. Finally, I would add Educating Archer. here you will see how to adapt material to you, even more amazing material, and learn that it is not the material that makes a good performance, but the performer.
These are not in an order of what or who is better, but in an order to view and grow as a performer. Banacheck's series was meant to lead people into mentalism, Richard's shows quite a bit of material and teaches even more, but his performance is subdued. (His goal is to teach, not create little clones.) Then John lays it all out there, you get to see 100% Archer. Any way, my thoughts, don't shoot. Tony |

I understand that you wish to rule out books in this discussion, but I think you might consider Theater of the Mind by Barrie Richardson. Unlike Corinda's 13 Steps (which is great), this book gives full routines used in the author’s current and modern professional shows. For example, Richardson’s Telephone Book Test is mind blowing. The mentalist throws a balloon into the audience. The spectator who catches it names a single digit, e.g. 6. That spectator throws the balloon to another random spectator, who names another digit, e.g. 4, and this procedure is repeated to identify a third number to complete a page number, e.g. 643. A spectator on stage turns to page 643 of a large metropolitan area telephone directory that he has been holding. That spectator is asked to close his eyes and run his finger down page 643 to select a particular telephone number. He opens his eyes and finds say 555-1234 and calls it out. Another spectator opens a large roll of paper he has been holding on stage since before the page number was selected, and written on the roll of paper in large size is the telephone number, 555-1234. The roll of paper is ordinary and can be inspected; so can the telephone book. There are no confederates.
Depending on what you wish to do, you might select different sources: For a book test, see Autome from Max Maven’s DVD. For a telephone number prediction, see Barrie Richardson’s book. For a time-of-day prediction using a watch, see Osterlind’s DVD. For metal bending, see Banachek’s DVD. For sightless vision (including driving blindfolded), see Tarbell first, then Kuda Bux. For naming thought-of cards, see Osterlind’s Radar Deck on his DVD. etc. Good luck. Jim Mullen

Thanks to everyone for the posts here. You've all given me much material to consider purchasing. In the end, I've decided to pick up Osterlind's Mind Mysteries 1-4. I'm sure that I'll enjoy watching the DVD's and look forward to getting some of the other items mentioned.

Good choice, they are choc full of solid material and great tips.
On a different note, no matter who's material you study, don't forget to be original in your approach to presentation and come up with your own quirks. You may already do this but try including at least one fully original effect of your own every performance and over time you will progress at a much faster rate just for doing this. If you really want to develop into a recognised individual performer this is the real secret. Cheeers, Al

Thanks Al,
I try to put my own twist on things that I learn from others anyways. But I also enjoy learning the principles so that I can come up with my own stuff too. |

Bradymc,
One other DVD I would recommend if you're getting into mentalism is Marc Paul's Mind2Mind DVD. It is excellent and just a single DVD. |

You cant go worng with Richard Osterlind's Mind Mysteries, they were the very first mentalism DVDs that I purchased and I've yet to exhaust the knowledge that is within. I hope that you will get the complete set and then get Banacheck's DVD set. Both give you so much information, you'll have more than enough material to keep you busy.
