I was wondering where I could get or buy half dollar coins for coin magic. I'm from argentina and here you can hardly find them. I have some friends living in the US and if there's a way to find them there and they are not too expensive I could tell them to bring the coins to me when they're back.
The question is where I can get half dollar coins, are they easy to find???? Best regards Pablo

I have no doubt you could get them on E-Bay Pablo. Where I live here in the USA you can go to the bank and just ask for some and they will give you as many as you need at price. Keep in mind they won't be silver though.

Copper and nickel are good enough tough. I do not want silver half dollars. As long as they are all the same (The same face and tail of the coin) I do not care much.
Where are you Fingers anyway? My friends are now in Mountain View California near San Francisco Thanks a lot I can check if they can go to the bank and ask for change. Best regards Pablo

I live in Pennsylvania, USA Pablo and there is no problem getting them from the bank here. However, I must mention, depending on the years you get they may have different faces or backs, so if your friend goes there he may have to look them over to get you coins all of the same type, but it still shouldn't be a problem.....

Yep...the US Mint is a great place to get some coins.
Also, as mentioned, any bank can get them for you. I've found that a lot of times the teller will only have a couple on hand. They can get them for you if you ask though. They will also sell you a half dollar coin (50 cents) for a half dollar. It is really just change and they don't (can't) make a profit on them. I wonder if you were to go to a bank that exchanges currency, if they might have a few available, or can get them for you? Probably not, but one never knows. Mark. |

I found in a coin shop (I do not know how it is called in english) But its an antique shop where they have all different coins olds and new from other countries just for collectors. I just went there and lucky me they had half dolars they were nickel - copper half dollars with kennedy in its face and the eagle in its tail.
I bough 10 of them and they were cheap. The only thing I did not like about those coins is the fact that the coins were a bit shabby and the edges were soft and it dificults me performing the edge palm. Best regards Pablo

Well good to see you found your half dollars. I would definetely have recommended the U.S. Mint because that's the easiest and safest way to get American coins on the net. You could even have tried Ebay sometimes you can get some deals.

In the US, if you go to the bank, can you :
- get shiny half-dollars (post 1971) ? or have they circulated ? - get 1 dollar coin ? What is the difference (in term of Magic usage) to use Silver Half or copper/Ni Half ? Thanks in advance for your answers. |

Its kind of just personal preference and presentational value. To me, silver coins sound, feel and just look nicer.

Hi kohai, yes you can get post 1971 shiny halves, in fact they are probably easiest to get at the bank. Most all have been circulated, but they are not worn or soft usually. You can get dollar coins too, but they are the newer ones that are a bit bigger than the quarter, you probably would not be able to get the older and bigger dollar coins however.
The difference in usage between the silver half and the copper/nickel half is mostly just what you prefer in looks and the sound of the coins clinking, other than that, not much. I have found that the spectators are more amazed by the silver coins, because you don't see them around much at all with normal usage.....

Well, in France, we don't see Half dollars at all, so I guess I'll stick to Cu/Ni half dollars for the moment!
Talking of Silver coins, do you mean exclusively 1964 Kennedy HD or are there some other years/types ? Thanks a lot for the replies |

There are plenty of other silver halves kohai, for example, I have silver walking liberty halves from the 30's and 40's. The copper/nickel halves will do just fine, I used them for several months and had no problem whatsoever before I got my silver walking liberties.....

Kohai,
As stated there is no real big difference between the new half's vs the old silver half's as far as the magic. It's more personal preference and affordability. The silver half's such as the 1964 Kennedys and Walking Liberty's sell at the price of silver which is from about $4 to $8 per coin depending on quality. I personally use mostly the newer half's as most gaff's are readily available for them. |
