This is a pic of me, my props and backdrop. I am currently adding wings to the backdrop. What colour and style would you suggest? Posted: Jan 11, 2007 12:09am Also, checkout http://www.spiderbackdrop.com/english/englisch.html for the new stargate backdrop. Looks great! |

If you go with the spider system I would keep the backdrop black. You already have a lot of color with your setup. I own the spider backdrop with the maroon curtains. I think the popular blue curtain will take away from your other colors in your setup. I am in the process of getting signs made to put on my curtains to help brand my logo.
Hope this helps, Tim |

Your color theme seems to be blue, green, and gold, in the picture perhaps starting there?
The poster you're leaning on looks quite nice perhaps something similar but taller? The balloon vest is the most stand out feature of your stage costume that might be a place to start as well. The blue balloon border, with a green insert, and gold lettering outlined in white. It sounds kind of awful but try it on the printer at home and see how it looks. I'm sure you'll some up with something smart. You never realize what a pain these things are till you actually sit down and do it. It is important stuff! I am sorry I didn't read the first post carefully about the wings. Are you wanting to use the spider manufacture's curtains. If so then you have a choice between 4 colors. I would probably just stay with black. Maybe hang your sign on the face of the curtains. I think the other colors will clash with your set up and take away from your setup.

Danny beat me to the punch. As a designer, I would pick up your accent colors based upon the colorsyou use in your show and attire. As Danny suggested, this looks more like the blue or green or gold color.

I really like the look of the new Spiderflex...one day I would like to upgrade my backdrop to this system...you have a very nice looking/professional set up.

Another option in curtains to consider is Tim Sonnefelt's Wonder Imagery.
http://www.timsonefelt.com/cgi-bin/store......rops.htm He does custom printed backdrops that stay attached and are stretched on a pop up frame. The printing is incredibly detailed and vibrant in color (depending on the digital file that you send in). The curtain is flat and is on slightly stretchy material that stays attached to the frame and upon set up stretches flat to take out any wrinkles. Of course graphically you can design a traditionally pleated curtain that looks 3D but is of course 2D. You can also get custom printed banners and suitcase table covers. All can be custom printed in exactly the colors you want and any logo or wording can be incorporated too. I've seen the printing at Tim's booth last Aug at Kidabra and it looks great. I'm in the process of having a suitcase table cover designed then I'll be saving up for the matching backdrop. Eventually I'll use the same backdrop frame but have different curtains and table covers printed for each theme show. An instant way to set the theme and mood for the show! I like the Spider curtains that I looked at throught the link, but the set up time is greater by having to add the curtains after the frame is up and the colors are limited as well as no performer/show customization. With Wondery Imagery being in the good ol USA, the shipping costs are also probably cheaper than from Europe. Just another option for you to consider amongst many choices.

Christopher - the spiderflex takes 4-5 minutes to set up. The curtains go on BEFORE the backdrop goes up!

Fair enough, the set up times are similar. I do like though that Wonder Imagery can custom print thousands of color combinations from the 18 ink printing process they use and that signage and theme can all be incorporated. They print whatever you and your graphic designer can imagine and submit. No need to attach seperate signage for your name/ show title. You can instantly set the theme and mood for the show with what becomes a "set" as oppossed to just a plain backdrop. The possibilites are endless. There are many options though with pros and cons to consider for each. Whatever makes you happy is the way to go. Just thought I'd add my thouhgts to the topic for consideration, in case all were not familiar with this option.
At the very least I think it is a great idea to have a suitcase-table banner custom designed and printed by this method. Attaches with velcro that's comes sewn to the back, and can be folded/rolled up and put in the case between shows. We all know it's powerful marketing to have one's name and maybe even web site displayed through out the whole show, and this is the perfect way to do it. The case banners are inexpensive enough that one could be designed for each theme show. This idea should definately be considered in my opinion by any working pro.

But he problem with spider backdrops is that they have no opening to walk throught he middle you have to buy 2 sets to have the opening and then its to big to fit in a house if you do birthdya parties. then the other problem is that if you are in a small banquest room and you need to only be 9' wide and 7' high then you can not use the spider back drop.
seems to me that unless you are always some where that you can fully extend the back drop it is not practical for the average magician who needs to set up in many different situations. just my thoughts sam
