I have it but have not looked at it for awhile. If you are good at taking principles and looking at new ways to use them you may find it interesting. If memory serves its not a book filled with actual illusions but more interesting principles, some practical some not.

The book is divided into six major sections based on "fundamental" principles - Psychological Visual Illusions, Physical Screening or Masking, Reflected Images, Lens Transmission, Trick Photography, and Chromatics and Focussed (sic) Light Waves. Each major section is then divided into several subsections or "specific" principles. These principles are explained in detail, and most even give several specific examples of illusions using the principle(s). There are probably more than 100 illusions addressed in the book.
Here is a description from Tannen's: "Never before has there been a reference manual as complete as this one for the magician. Compiled by S.H. Sharpe, and illustrated by Mike Jaynes, every optical principle used in magic can be found in this compilation. Many years in progress, it's complete with additions and revisions which bring this work up-to-date. The information deals with the whole range of illusions, large and small, with descriptions and important references to the origin of the various optical principles involved. The six sections are Psychological Visual Illusions, Physical Screening or Masking, Reflected Images, Lens Transmission, Trick Photography, and Chromatics and Focussed Light Waves. Conjurers' Optical Secrets is a storehouse of vital information for the magician. Three hundred drawings detail all the principles..." If you need additional information, please let me know.

Sharpe also has 2 (or is it 3) other books on equipment magic, Mechanical Secrets and, I believe, Hydraulic Secrets. This series of books is excellent in the amount of material covered.

I know Hollywood Magic on Hollywood Blvd. in Los Angeles sells it. I am pretty sure Misdirections Magic Shop out of California also sells it, and I believe dennymagic.com does as well. I have thought quite a bit about getting it myself. --Jack |
