Hi all I Just discovered that The new 2006 Canadian Penny's are attracted to magnets . Now no more need for shells. I guest they put more steel in theme now. Just thought it would be great to let you know.

There are many out there already from previous years as well. Any Canadian Penny with a little tiny "P" just under the queens head will be magnetic.

Quite a surprise to me as well. Presumably the average layman doesn't know this fact, which we can use to our advantage. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Alain.

Not all pennies in one year are ferrous though. There are still lots of 2006's that are NOT.

I believe it depended on where they were minted, at least that is what I was told. You'ld think there would be some standard metal or alloy they used, but it varys.

Many other years aklso have the occasional ferrous one.

Very deceptive. Oddly enough there are still some Canadians who don't even know that regular Canadian coins tend to be ferrous. Go figure.

I do not know anything about the 'p' though.

Why would they put it only on the ones that happen to be ferrous?

Yes, the 'p' does mean there is steel in there. I forget the exact details. I think it was 'p'lated steel maybe is what it stands for.

It is because they are cheaper to make with steel.

I think after 2006 they were going to change this 'p' into a different symbol.

Hi,

I also found out that not all nickles are not magnetic. I find this useful when I have a bag full of nickles or pennies and have the spec sign the magnetic one while the rest are not magnetic and thus able to fish out their signed coin from a bag of coins.
