Get a copy of each and compare them - every reader is looking for something different and has his/her preference.

Genii?
Service has not been that great. Tried ordering 3 years of back issues they said were in stock on Jan 6th. AFTER they took my money it took them 6 weeks to tell me 3 issues of one year were missing and 2 issues of another year. Asking me if I wanted a refund for issues missing or other back issues. Only took 9 weeks or so to get these. Still haven’t see credit for back issues. Also started new subscription Jan 6th. Got March issue. If I want Jan and Feb it will cost $7 per issue.
An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.

Don't read Genii, but maybe I'll try it now. Currently getting MAGIC and it is great.

Not having read any of these magazines, could those of you who like, love or dislike your magazines elaborate on what you find in them that gets you excited (or not), any monthly columns that have been helpful and in what areas (learning new tricks, presentation, promotion, etc.), and how you have benefitted from reading them. I'm fortunate enough to have a couple of well stocked magic stores and I plan on going by to peruse and pick up a copy of those that grab my eye to help decide in subscribing, but maybe I'll pick up an "off" month and it's hard to get a complete history and value of something from just one item. So go ahead, rave or rant about the magazines you read.
Thank you for your insights!

While I was on vacation in Illinois visiting relatives, my grandmother happened upon a collection of MUM magazine from a coworker's husband who happened to be a magician. I really enjoy them and am thinking about possibly subscribing. I would reccommend it.

I'm glad this topic popped up because I was actually going to start one myself. If anyone could give me advice which mag to go for, I would appreciate it. I don't think I can financially justify getting 3 or 4 magazines. But I am thinking of joining the IBM so Linking Ring would be an option.
Here is what I am looking for: I am primarily interested in keeping up with what is going on in the world of magic (news). My secondary interests are the theoretical and psychological aspects of magic (i.e., Can a trick be too perfect? Is it better to make yourself seem like an expert (with flourishes and such) or not?) and the history of magic. Tricks are actually what I am the least interested in but as far as tricks, I do close-up so that would be what I would want the magazine to focus on. Should I get Linking Ring, Genii or Magic Mag? |
