I asked about this in general terms in my "ceremony room" post, but recent discussions have led me to readdress the topic.
We are building a theatre room for bizarre performances. One of the things to be performed there is séances. Due to the venue, it appears that the fire marshal will not allow us to have any open flame. Normally the low light part of the séance would be done to candlelight. Does anyone have any good suggestions for lighting that will help to maintain the spooky atmosphere? We can build in any kind of lighting, so lighting can be portable or built in (but must be able to go out on queue). Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have. Dave |

Candles?

Dr_Zodiac,
I guess I wasn't clear. The problem is that we normally use candles, but the fire marshal won't let us use them here, so we are looking for a good alternative. Sorry for the confusion. Dave |

Hi Dave,
There are prop candles that work on batteries, or plug in wall socket. They're cheap only a buck or two. I've done seances with a lamp using 25 watt bulb, and a green or red cloth draped over it. Hope this helps! ...... Manyfingers |

Depending on the size of the room, and a number of other factors, an illuminated crystal ball with an on-off foot switch might work.

The "real" seances at places like Chesterfield, Indiana, often use a very, very dim red light. Otherwise, the entire room is absolutely dark. No glowing anything, anywhere.
This is a problem for safety codes. I covered the electric EXIT signs with a glow-in-the-dark EXIT sign for the few minutes of blackout that I needed.

Thank you for the responses. You have at least got me thinking.
Since there are going to be several bizarrists, doing several different types of shows (including the séance) we will have to give this some serious thought. The red light idea might be worth playing with for the séance, since spiritualists have used that for years. I might also play with more theatrical lighting. Just trying to kind of brainstorming here. I am also considering using black light. It would allow for some interesting effects. BTW: thanks Bill for mentioning the exit signs. I have been considering that. The fire marshal has already okayed the glow in the dark variety, so long as they are kept charged. I am just wondering if that small amount of glow is going to interfere with the blackout portions. I have found that a very small amount of light can ruin the effect. Did you find it to be a problem? Thanks all, Dave |
