I am surprised to see that the mentalist section is the most popular just after the card magic section. It is of course *great*, but I'm curious to why. It's not like that on other boards.

Because we're all funny and charming, while remarkably inventive and modest, and the rest want to see what all the fuss is about?

Ah, yes that explains it. Not to mention beautiful, rich and famous!

I agree with Drew
Actually, I think a big part of it is that the mentalism is seperated from the bizarre. Also, there is a lot of great talent here offering sound advice, Ian Rowland, Mark Strivings, Paul Hallas, Drew McAdam & all the other mentalists here, you guys are great! I think this section is great, any question you ask is going to be answered by someone. I know that some other boards questions will often go unanswered or the replies will be someone wondering the same thing. You guys are the best! |

I think it's because the mentalists are using their Jedi mind tricks to lure the rest of us over here, planting little subliminal commands in the other forums. Even worse, I think it's working. When I joined this board a few months ago I had absolutely no interest in mentalism, but now I find myself reading this forum every day, and thinking things like "You know, this cold reading stuff might be worth investigating after all, and that Banachek metal bending video does sound interesting..." So to all you message-planting mentalists, I say cut it out right now! Evil manipulators of dark forces, I rebuke you! I do not have the time or the disposable income to support an interest in yet another branch of magic, so just leave me to my little card tricks!
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

Like a lot of people, I started out by focusing on card magic. I was obsessed. And the Card forum was my favorite part of this site. But something has happened to me. Mentalism has taken over. And seeing Marc Salem just reinforced the issue. Now I come to "Penny" almost exclusively and barely glance at the card section.

This board is excellent all round. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable people and none of the Politics of certain other places. I love it.

I don't know. I'm not even particularly fond of mentalism, yet for some strange reason I find myself drawn to this forum. It's as if someone is controlling my mind ... (and it's never been me)

Messageboards seem to take off once they hit "critical mass". Many of us read multiple boards, but will post where there seems to be the most activity.

Yup. The more activity there is, the greater the chances of finding something to respond to, and therefore the high activity level continues -- or even increases.

Vernon (yes, The Professor) once said, "The future of magic is mentalism". The future is now!
