I am sorry people have had bad experiences with psychics...Slyvia Browne seems to be the poster child here. The last link has nothing to do with Sylvia Browne or psychics as far as I can tell (if I missed something I'm sure someone will post the error within a couple nanoseconds).
The Sylvia Browne site seems to be a skeptics site with anonymous posts. That is reliable information. There is probably something somewhere from an objective source though...I've seem Sylvia Browne read...she is a great promoter but only an average reader. I've always felt a reader should return the money if the sitter hasn't got their money's worth (it is easy to tell if they are happy). I do doubt Sylvia Browne will offer such a guarantee. Now shall we post pictures and stories of medical malpractice victims? Then we can all agree that doctors are the scum of the earth too as well as anyone who agrees with them. Does anyone want to point out the logical fallacy here? As long as we are at it we can toss in damaged people from counseling...counselors are sued at a higher rate than medical professionals. We can also link to pages where people post their problems with science and established medicine and how following that advice ruined their lives and gave them false hope. This line is a very emotionally driven discussion...not appropriate for skeptics at all. Waiting for a righteous indignation reply. Posted: Jan 21, 2007 12:28pm OK...still thinking...I might make a skeptic's day with this post. I saw on one of those links that Sylvia charges $700-800 for a reading. I was thinking for that kind of money she had better come with some serious heat (she didn't, but that isn't where I am going right now). So I started thinking...what readings would I have had that would have been worth that to the sitter? A few passed by and then one stood out. I'll keep the details somewhat generic as the officer involved is still on the streets and with a little digging someone could find him...he has a reasonable expectation of confidentiality when he talked to me. I had been hired by a guy who owned several bars a few years back. This was in the uppper midwest. I was doing short palm readings as entertainment. One of these bars was right by the police station...a cop bar. I read cops there every week. A few weeks prior there had been a horrendous event...two cops went on a call where some guy had barricaded himself in a low-line motel. The guy fired a couple rounds randomly and tragically caught one young cop in the side of the head and killed him. To the cops credit they still took him alive and unhurt but the damage was already done. So now, a few weeks later one of the cops I know comes up to me in the bar. He points to a guy and tells me that is the guy's partner who got killed. Can you spend some time with him? I spent a long time with him. We got a booth in the corner and everyone just left us totally alone. We did some basic reading and then started to get serious. Basically I did a lot of healing in his heart...as much as I could. Some scars will never heal. Though the time I spent with him would have been worth that kind of fee I remember money was irrelevant. There was no thought of money, just one heart touching another. So, two thoughts... A reading can be worth that much money but when it is it is probably more helpful to give it to them. Even in a short reading you can hit something heavy. Skeptics will argue that unqualified people shouldn't even do short readings....maybe they shouldn't. You can be qualified with training in schools or life (both have advantages and drawbacks). As an ending thought... I do question psychics who charge that much for individual readings. I am there to help...I deserve to live too but if I charge the average person that much I will be hurting them. Private readings go most places for $75-125/hr, give or take a lot. Parties for strolling work usually start at $100/hr. That's enough for me... |

I see it as a bad thing when "psychics" tell people about missing children, dead relatives, and also advice them about medical conditions, like in the case of Sylvia Browne. I've head a few times of cases that she gave medical advices that could turn very dangerous.
I don't have a problem with readings if they are done as a form of enterianment and don't involve the things I posted above. |

Quinn,
Good Post with a good point. Let me be more specific. I agree that people who knowingly exploit others are the scum of the earth, however, my post was directed at those of us on this board. We will have little impact on Randi, Sylvia Brown, or any other “talk to the dead” person out there. People will believe what they want to believe. There is very little that you can do about it. If you wish to make that your life’s goal… great, go for it. But as we have seen even Randi cannot stop the avalanche of frauds that permeate the air waves. Even when they are brought to their knees…. They simply wait and reinvent themselves and the public buys right back into it, no problem. You can not win that type of battle. So when I see a long thread that simply banters back and forth about Randi should do this or Randi should do that . . . I think who cares. I and we do not know what kind of idiots Randi has had to deal with. Perhaps there are so many that it takes up too much of his time so he decided to come up with a way to deal with them. Kind of like the American Idol of psychics. Hey you got to at least make it to round 5 to challenge me. Who knows? Unless someone knows Randi personally and can get the straight dope all this speculation is simply a waste of time, when we could be putting our time towards more worth-while endeavors. I wonder if Montel or any of his Producers see this? Or the Advertisers? What motivates them to Enable people like Sylvia Brown? Should they share in the punishment that she deserves?
It is the fakers that have Randi backing down from everyone else. They seem like easy pickins....only, why is Sylvia still here?

Just because you contact the dead does not mean you are scum.
I will expand on my previous reading...during that reading we contacted the policeman's dead partner who had been murdered in front of his eyes. The man I was reading had been to therapy but it wasn't helping. Despite it being a random shot the partner had massive guilt at surviving, as you can imagine. Brother Shadow's Have Seance Will Travel had come out a bit before and I used his technique. I have never used it before or after this...there just hasn't been a need. Instead of Brother Shadow's piece for a focal point we used something given to him by his partner's wife at the funeral that used to belong to his partner. It was the major part of our session...though he never broke down crying he was deeply moved and in his exact words I remember to this day..."very much healed". His demeanor showed much relief. This was a cop bar...he talked to the other cops and I was there several times afterwards...I got nothing but thanks from the other cops for helping him. I didn't charge...if he had offered I would have accepted...not for the money but when someone offers you money in such a time they want you to accept. In this case though we had gone pretty deep and had a very intimate session...money just didn't seem right. Science and psychiatry failed him...he needed magick. |

I think that all of us here do (or at least can) make the distinction between helpful readings (essentially consoling someone over the loss of their loved one) and predatory readings (such as those by psychics claiming to locate missing children). There was no benefit to the parents of Shawn Hornbeck when Sylvia Browne told them that he was dead and gave a general location to look for his body. In fact, there was quite a bit of harm inflicted; not only in that they were told that their son was dead when we wasn't, but in the money and man-hours wasted in the fruitless search for his body. There is no excuse for what Browne did in this case and in countless others like it, but that doesn't mean all people who do readings should be painted with the same brush as she.

Polka,
Thank you very much. Well said. Mota, I can tell that you do good work, and also that you really care about people, which is a must for anyone who gives readings. I am positive that the officer in question will not forget how you assisted him. Stay well, Jerome.

Just had lunch with a Psychic Reader yesterday. She had contacted Randi about his challenge. She predicted that it would snow here in Florida. They put her off! In just a few days it miraculously snowed in St. Augustine. (First time I've heard of it happening in this decade) She has the email from them still. She said that most people with psychic abilities see Randi as a con-man himself. That makes sense to me If they are truely Psychic they WOULD know such things. Perhaps that is why REAL Psychics avoid him

And regarding her snow prediction, this kind of "psychic" power is actually quite well known; it is called "weather forecast". And the psychic powers used for it are based on computer processors. |

The cool thing about being a forecaster is that they are always 100% right....
Behold "There is a 50% chance it will rain" Sunny day "See I was right!" .... "There is a .05% chance of a meteor hitting Texas today" No meteor "See, I was right!" ...... "There is a 99% chance it will thundershow tomorrow" Beautiful sunny day - forecaster has taken day off to play golf "See I was right!" (Last example a tribute to Curb your Enthusiasm) Hacha

There were no forcasts of SNOW. Hasn't been snow in years and years! We are in FLORIDA. With this "Global Warming" snow may not be a good bet in St. Augustine. She claims that Radi's organization was simply RUDE, at the least. Everyone here speaks about what they think, but this is a person who actually WANTED the money/challeng until they were so demeaning to her. Maybe she doesn't need to be Psychic to see how they are acting like jerks? Perhaps their "Backing Down" justified her feelings of Con-Man.

Did she say exactly when it would snow? I mean, the exact day and maybe the hour? You said that she claimed it would snow in Florida. In days? Months? Years? If that's the case, then I can't blame them for not taking her seriously.
And there's always the chance that she heard somewhere it might snow, even if it wasn't told on an official forecast. |

Please re-read your post...You sound like some kind of Randi Drone.
You seem to be badmouthing this girl before you know ANY facts! I DO blame them...It DID snow, and THEY dodged the challenge. She has coppies of the emails, but I'm sure NOTHING will change your mind.

I didn't say I know any facts, that's why I was asking you for them. Maybe you are the one who should re-read my post, and hopefully even give some answers this time.
Posted: Jan 23, 2007 5:07pm In an unrelated story, a few weeks ago there was a show in Israel that showed how a miracle worker managed to make a handicapped person get up from his wheelchair using electric powers in his hands. Most people knew it must be a lie of course, but still there are always those who believe in that stuff. Today some porgram exposed the story and how everyone in the production knew that the man could walk and didn't even need a wheelchair. Now everyone is very angry about that, mostly those who are really in wheelchairs and thought it was all for real. Some people might say it was all done for entertainment, but personaliy I didn't see anything fun about that. Just thought it was interesting to add in this Randi thread. |

Yes, you are right..... It is totally unrelated.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Did she say exactly when it would snow? I mean, the exact day and maybe the hour? And there's always the chance that she heard somewhere it might snow, even if it wasn't told on an official forecast --------------- I see very little open mindedness here. Just excuses!!!!!!!! No level playing field. Randi is dodging certain people, and that's a fact!
