Regensburg was also the first place where they built a bridge across the Danube. In the middle of the old part of town, and it's old, is the nicely-preserved town gate, built by the Romans, a couple of thousand years ago.
The museum is a superb one, with anthropological, historical, and artistic artifacts. It contains things, almost all from the immediate vicinity, from neolithic times to the present...primitive tools; weapons; a 7,000 year old set of tattoo equipment; a half-scale (if I remember correctly) cutaway model of a Roman house, including its central heating and water systems; a Messerschmidt car (an awesome piece of machinery); etc. Bill, I agree with you about the Grimms. In a way, they strove to make a definitive statement of German literature, and that theme was part of the nationalist intellectual development of the 19th century. And that bridge is great! I love bridges!

Actually, the bridge isn't quite that old. It was built between 1135 and 1146. Then they broke for lunch.

Perhaps Bill will know this:
Is there a Troll under the bridge? |

No, but there is the Nix, who is the monster that lives in the Strudel. Strudel is the German word for a whirlpool.
Interestingly, there is a pun involved in the name of the monster -- the Nix. It sounds like "nichts," which is the german word for "nothing" or "the void." Those dern Germans! Always so witty!

Bill, the problem with just sending my wife to the Weinachtsladen is that I quite like to visit the store myself. As far as what things cost: 1) my wife doesn't buy a lot of Christmas stuff (she believes in "basteln"), and 2) not only has she never been to America, but I doubt she never will.
Regarding Regensburg: it's one of my favorite cities in Germany. I was only there once, during a bike trip ( ), but I found it much more interesting than Rothenburg. Geschmackssache. Ah, but the Brüder Grimm and the holocaust? A big, big stretch. Big. Really. Big. Bizzare, even. And by the way, "der Strudel" may be a natural whirlpool, but a jacuzzi is..."der Whirlpool". Yes, Germans are witty. Gruss, Jeff Goettingen |

I PM'ed you about the Grimms.
This has nothing to do with them, but it has a twisted feel to it. Years ago at the renaissance festival, there was a harpist who found out that I knew the words to "die Lorelei." So, whenever I passed by her harp stand, she would get me to sing it as she played the harp. I did it in German. Now most people don't appreciate being sung at in a "Farn tongue," so I would explain the song as follows: "On the Rhein, near St. Goarshausen, there is a very large cliff. According to the legend, there is a beautiful maiden who sits atop the cliff, combing her beautiful, golden hair as she gazes into her golden mirror and sings her beautiful song. As the sailor goes down the river in his little boat, when he gazes towards the top of the cliff, all he can see is her beautiful face, and all he can hear is her hypnotic melody. As he watches her and listens to her, he crashes into the rocks below and drowns. "It's a childrens' song."

Bill, please pm me about the Grimm/Holocaust connection. It doesn't seem too farfetched to me, seeing as Adolph was big on lebensraum and norse legend and such.

I have a book titled, "The Book of Execution: An Encyclopedia of Judicial Execution".
It's pretty good, especially the beheading chapter. Something that one doesn't think about is that many of the executioners didn't really enjoy their job, thus they drank to help them get through their duties. And being drunk, their axe weilding skills weren't always up to par. They didn't always lop off the head on the first try. Imagine the victim wondering if the next swing of the axe will end his life or only maybe slice off half of his face. I'm going to open a can of raviolis now; I just made myself hungry. Marqus |

Nearly-headless Nick, it took some forty whacks to do him in, an' 'is 'ead still didn' come off clean. ;-P (Okay okay, enough Potter from me )
Really, though, it IS shameful, as a human, that people would sit round and dream up these devices. I'm ashamed of my species. It shows that Hell is no more a "place" than Heaven, they're a state of mind.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.
