Yes yes yes and Strasbourg Cathedral...Giger was surely inspired in his youth by this monolith. When we were there again last summer, the weathered patina had begun to resemble army camouflage rendering the sturcture organically invisible to what?

My all-time favorite haunted city is Venice. City of art decaying on the laguna... We you quit the tourist tracks and enter the ghetto and the little streets, there's another world waiting for the explorer.

I have been to Castle Bran it is often mistaken as "Draculas" Castle because it is what we think of visually. Vlad Tepes was imprisoned there for some time but he was a Boyer and treated more like a guest, He was known to impale rodents and small birds during his stay.
There is a Dracula's Castle in Romania, it is newer and was built where Vlad once had his main Castle. It is a hotel, I stayed there and they do a fun little show in the basement. The food and opera is amazing! I went to his Dad's house where he was born. The most gothic of his Castles is the one in the Carpathian Mountains on the Danube river where he made his last stand and created the forest of the dead by impaling 14,000 Turks in six weeks some say. His wife at the time commited suicide by jumping out a window into the Danube, She did not want to be taken prisoner by the Turks. There are only the ruins of 3 walls but the the ruins are truely fantastic. What about Boleskine Manor where Crowley performed the sacred magic of Abramelin the Mage. Or The Abby of Thelema on the Island of Cefalu, off the coast of Sicily |

The catacombs in Rome are creepy, too.
Boleskine Manor is on the shore of Loch Ness. It has been suggested that the monster is something Aleister Crowley conjured up, but I believe it has been around longer than that. And let us not forget Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida! That is a truly frightening place! Bill

With all reverence and due piety (I hope no one misunderstands my intention here), by FAR the most haunted, desolate, spiritually shattering place I have ever been is Birkenau.
I truly believe that had you taken me there blindfolded and not told me where I was, I STILL would have said, "this is a terrible, terrible place." It's as if the very soil is poisoned. (Since then, I have also thought that anyone who denies the Holocaust should visit, and they will KNOW that they are denying the truth. They will feel the evil, unless they are totally soul-dead.) It is the most ghost-ridden place on earth. Again, I hope no one misunderstands my intentions. If you are just looking at the list of Gothic places as a kind of interesting fantasy tour of the creepy and unusual, obviously this doesn't fit. If you truly are interested in ever visiting a place that might just change your life because it is bleak and horrible and filled with the ghosts of a million murdered human beings, this is the place. One of the most pleasant of the "spooky spots" is Stonehenge. I visited there in 1990 and again in 1998. In 1998, the circle was still roped off, so you had to have special permission to gain entry. There was a tour out of London with a company called "Astral Travels," that had special permission to enter the circle after hours. I had been lecturing in Milton Keynes and had my Merlin outfit with me. I got permission to bring my "Wizard Suit" and have my photo taken among the stones.
They gave us some dowsing rods to play with. I dowsed Stonehenge. WOW! What a neat experience!!!! The place has a very pleasant feel, as if the stones are glad to have us in their midst. Later, during the same trip, I dowsed Avebury, and a small circle in Scotland near Kilmartin called "Temple Wood." At one of the stones in Temple Wood, my dowsing rod spun like a helicopter blade, not only for me, but for my wife, who, until that moment had been a complete skeptic.

I have some T-shirts that I wear under my Merlin outfit when I perform. They are black with a drawing of Stonehenge and the words "Orthodox Druid" above the drawing.
A Wiccan friend told me she likes the T-shirt with the picture of "The Holy Land."

Speaking of Holy Land, last year I returned to Rome and the Vatican. I want to go back next year and spend more time. Does anyone know if they let buskers work St. Peter's Square?

Overheard in St. Peter's Square: "No, I don't know if that guy in the window is the Pope, but the guy standing next to him is Tony Iacoviello."

Tony you might also want to drop any effects that use smoke of any kind (white or black)...its a touchy sign for them and they might get little too excited. |

Stonehenge is cool. I went there many years ago when you could still just walk in, and stood there visualizing a levitation at twilight. I'll have to pull out my slides one of these days.
Speaking of Yellowstone and the geysers, has anyone else been to Hell, on Grand Cayman, in the British West Indies? It looks like nothing else on earth. One of the spookiest places I've ever been (not Gothic, just spooky ), was the ET ride at Universal Orlando after hours. We were doing some work for the Universal park in Osaka and needed to inventory and replicate a lot of the plants, trees, props, and other stuff. So, after the ride closed for the night, we went thru with cameras and notepads and printouts and basically documented the whole thing. It was lit by maintenance lights, there was still fog all over the place from the sprayers, water on the floor, shadows, dead silence, and these figures of ET and friends just inches away. At one point I made a wrong turn and just about got lost... We did the same thing for Back to the Future and Kongfrontation, but neither one gave me the same feeling as ET. Another fun experience was the National Cathedral in Washington. Many years ago my Mom and visited the place while it was still under construction, and went to the gift shop in the basement just before closing time. On the way back up, we got lost, and of course we were the only people around.

Well Stonehenge is one heck of a place...
In Namibia (where JR Tolkien used to live if I remember well!) there are some weird landscapes too |
