Seriously, As a childrens entertainer, do you keep up with cartoons and movies?
I find myself at night flicking through channels when the kids are asleep and end up watching Spongebob or something. I also am looking forward Shrek 3. I find keeping check on cartoon characters can help during shows. Lofty |

Definetely. My kids are 5 years apart...ages 4 and 9, so I end up being able to watch a wide trend spectrum. It's fun to just look in their rooms and see what's going on by the posters on the walls and the gizmos on the dressers and shelves.
What's interesting to me, though, is that many kids are having Star Wars parties still...now that's marketing tenacity! Chris |

Absolutely. First off I am an artist and the artist in me has always loved and admired cartoons and the art of anaimation. I am a big fan and have a vast collection of animation books and cells as well as a large Disney cartoon library.
I love watching them also because of the fact that a lot of what I create in my kid show magic stems from outward sources. This basically just means I do not look at magic for my creative ideas. I look towards movies, songs, culture and any outward sources like cartoons to come up with creative ideas that are fun for my audiences. Kyle

Chris - Speaking of Star Wars - My son is 5 and absolutely loves star wars. We are actually going to paint his room 'yoda green' and make it like a swamp (have some vines from the ceiling and stuff).

That sounds like fun. it is interesting how Star Wars is effecting an totally new generation. I remember as a kid being hooked on Star Wars. I absolutely loved it and stood in long lines for the movies with my friends and collecting the cards and action figures. Kyle

Completely guilty. I will watch them with or without my daughter. Thank goodness that Boomerang came along....I can still get my fix of Scooby Doo, even if I have seen every episode a multiple of times! (AND own the DVD set) We also have all the Disney DVDs, and Pixar's. I am just an overgrown kid myself and my hubby isn't too much better! LOL As many of my rec kids will tell you! I am right in there with them and my daughter on every game, activity, water balloon fight, etc.
How are you ever supposed to entertain them, if you can't connect with them?! |

There hasn't been a day that goes by that I don't watch some kinda cartoon, having 6 kids and one grandchild ya know.
I use references and familiar phrases from popular cartoons in my kid shows, it seems to help connect with the kids. johnny

As a balloon artist, I really need to keep up with popular children's characters. My wife and I have no children (very much by choice), but still watch cartoons daily, see every new family film that comes out, and go to Disneyland about once a week (God bless annual passes). The best part is, since they are for business research and education, we get to write them all off on our taxes!
Life is good.

I was performing last night at a high school fundraiser, and a couple tricks I do uses cards I printed up with sponge bob characters. The amazing thing to me is that EVERYONE knows sponge bob, from 3 year olds to adults. By using the special cards, it changes a trick that is only marginally interesting to the children into one that they can easily relate to and get excited about. There is someting about cartoons and comics that appeals to almost everyone. I can hardly wait for the next Pixar movie to come out. You can see the trailer at pixar.com. Enjoy -

You want to get a kid's attention then just share with them about how funny you thought Sponge Bob (or whatever is current) was last night. I received this tidbit from David Kaye aka Silly Billy. I've done it and the response from kids have been really powerful. Try it and see the response you get...you will be surprised!
Smartini ps. Of course this tip is a lot easier for me since I did watch Sponge Bob last night with my two kids aged 5 and 8. |

Other than Sponge Bob I couldn't tell you a single name of a cartoon charactor developed after the 70's.

Of course, we should make sure that we watch cartoons for inspiration and entertainment and NOT to ripped off their ideas and more importantly, their images.
I always thinks it cheapens a magician when he creates an act around other people and companies products and trademarked images....and its illegal! |

Of course, watch cartoons, I do, especially The Simpsons. The cartoons definitely affect my style, and my shows. But I don't really rip off their ideas. More the tempo and the style of dialogue.

I love the Simpsons and Futurama.
A few months ago I spent two days watch all 37 episodes of The Mysterious Lost Cities of Gold. I am also a big fan of Miyazaki. My Neighbour Totoro is one the greatest movies about being a child you will ever see. Magicians might enjoy the new US cartoon Fairly Odd Parents. Its got some great characters and use of magical theming. |

I enjoy animated movies. The squirrel in IceAge was hilarious. Some of the newer cartoons are terrible. Give me the Road Runner or Bugs Bunny any day. 73 Donnie

One of the fun things about a rash of recent cartoons, is that they all seem to have a base of products that can be incorporated into effects. In this way you avoid violating image license issues. There are a number of the "collectible card games" and bits for "Card Captors"- a fun one for the girls, "Yugioh" and yes, even the "Pokemon" are still out there. We found that the Spiderman playing cards had aces and faces that lent to some effects that we normally only do for the adults, because kids don't follow the story well with regular pips.
I think the only thing to remember is not to give your effect a name using the licensed name without permission (or to try marketing it...) I recall years ago at a Sci-Fi convention someone was doing a three card monte with Star Trek pictures on the cards. k

I do a card trick for the kids that they love. It is the old Cowboy & Indians routine, however, I purchased different cartoon decks of cards. Putting the face cards together I glued them so the cartoons are on one side and the bicycle backs are on the other. I then created my storyline. It is such a simple trick, yet the kids are absolutely amazed by it, and for them, it is much more entertaining because they can follow along with some familiar faces.
